    Question How-to Disable ABS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Coming from 13+years with Subaru, I've driven many MANY time on tracks and lakes in winter (up here in the great north). Every year I take courses with an instructor (http://sylvainb.com - sorry it's in french). This year will be my first time with the S4 and since the instructor always insists we turn off as many stabilisation systems as possible, including (and more importantly) ABS, I'm looking for a way to turn it off completely. Obviously, this will be only for the duration of the courses. I really want to stretch this: THE CAR WILL NOT BE DRIVEN ON A PUBLIC ROAD WITHOUT ABS.

Did some research and it seems like the only way to go is to pull the ABS fuse. Unfortunately I haven't seen anything about the B8.5 specifically, so here are my questions:

1- Which fuse should I be looking for (interior or under the hood)? A diagram would be VERY appreciated!
2- What can I expect? I've read about long chimes and braking light being constantly on. Anything else? More specifically, will the car be "drivable"?
3- Could this, somehow, be detected by the dealer when I go later this year for maintenance? (obviously by then the fuse will be back on). If so, could that create a problem (like a TD1 or something like that)?
4- Is the EPS automatically turned off when the ABS is disabled or should I do that as well? If so, should I use the normal technique (holding the button for 3-4 second)?
4- Anything else I should think about?

Thank you in advance for your help :)

EPS will turn off if there is no ABS pump active. I am not sure where to fuse is, I image it is in under hood. If it is not itemized in your quick manual, it is likely under the cowl in the hood next to the firewall and ECU, but I think those are all relays, I can't remember.

Thanks! While I RTFM, can you explain what happens if it's a relay (as opposed to a fuse). Will I be able to remove it as easy?

Yeah, a relay would be three to five prongs as opposed to a two pronged fuse. The metal is typically a thicker gauge, and there is more tension on the connectors. It will be a bit harder to yank out. If you pull it, or remove the actual module, you will definitely get a vag code, likely and engine light, and the ESC light. I am not sure if the EPC light will come on along with limp mode. I'll check for you. I'm in my car now.

    Driver side interior

A2, ESC control module (same as holding down traction control button for ten seconds.
    B2, also ESC
    B10 also ESC

Nothing related to traction control or braking aside from the parking brake in the interior. The consumer manual has no info on the fuses or relays under the hood. One of them is for abs, has to be. Granted, I don't quite understand why you would want to disabled abs. I understand the traction control part... but if your brakes lock up, they lock up, they won't pump. They probably won't unlock until you near a stop or stopped while on ice.

Might also be able to pull a fuse for the steering wheel angle sensor, if that's available. It should be tied to ABS as well. I had the steering angle system die on my A4, and I lost both ABS and ESP.

Well I'm back from my lesson and, even tough I wasn't able to disable the ABS, I was able to go through the course with only the ESP off. Even though the ABS was still ON I found it less intrusive when EPS was OFF. May be only psychological tough..
