    Gated shifter plate

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So after many searches and many hours of work completed by way of numerous forum member post, comments and instructions, I see it appropriate to finally contribute something of my own.

I have always enjoyed the look of gated shifters and decided to fabricate one for my car and see how well the design could work out. After a little work I was successful in creating what you see below. I am quite pleased with the results and really enjoy driving with it. Please share your feedback as I plan to make many more of these if there is enough interest. I read of a few others who wanted one as well, so if you would like one please comment on what you like or don't like.

The shift knob is of my creation also, something I tried for my own personal taste. Feel free to comment on it as well.

I like the idea but not a big fan of the finish. If you make it look more oem-ish that would be dope :)

I like it! I would use a more metallic shift knob but that's just personal taste.

Looks like an afterthought. Need to work a bit more on it so it's integrated better and looks more OEM. Brutal honesty. I know quite a few posted about this in B6/7 A4 sections, probably even more than here. If you do what is suggested above, I believe you'll have some folks who would buy. A+ for an effort, C for fit. It's nice to see something different, quite refreshing actually

I agree with the others, if you made the surrounding plate fill in the entire space vacated by the shift boot it would look 10x better. Going off what you have now, assuming the lever is easily moved into and out of each gear, filling in that extra space should be very easy and I imagine you'd be able to sell quite a few if reasonably priced!

My thoughts as well, I applaud you for doing this, very cool.

This looks like a good prototype stage. As Ryan said, the only thing that really throws it off is that it looks like a simple square over the shift boot area. If you extend this piece to cover the complete shift boot area it will look awesome.

Also, if you pop out that chrome trim piece on the shift surround there is a recess that may be a perfect area to "drop" the shift plate into. Just some food for thought!

Fantastic, thanks a lot for the feedback everyone! The black piece the aluminum plate is attached to helps with small adjustments needed to get proper fit. Needed to add that for my first take to make things easy for myself.

I do agree with the general consensus thus far on making the plate section fill in that entire area.

The next revision I plan to incorporate this change along with deeper counter sinks to make the bolts sit better and grind the plate in one direction only to match the trim grain direction.

Getting the curve shape of the R8 plate will be a challenge. I personally think a flat plat matches better with this application. Opinions on this would be appreciated

Sorry but I'd vote for the R8 style curved plate, it emphasises the underlying mechanics IMHO.

Agree with what everyone already mentioned... would love to see it fill that entire area and then maybe get it done in Carbon Fiber or fish-scale Alum so it looks OEM. As far as the curve from birds eye view it wouldn't matter but entering the car not sure how it would look.
