2015 Audi A4 6MT Shifting issues in cold weather

    Hey everyone,

I picked up my 2015 Audi A4 about a year ago, and I've been noticing an issue with my gearbox when shifting from 3rd to 2nd in the cold weather. Shifting from 1st to 2nd is notchy/clunky, shifting from 2nd into 3rd is stiff, and downshifting from 3rd into 2nd causes a grinding sound and some vibration through my shifter. I've been driving a manual my whole life and have never come across this issue. I took the car to Queensway Audi where the shop foreman road-tested my car and ensured me that everything was ok with the car and the issue couldn't be re-created.

Is there anyone else out there that has had this same issue?

This issue only when the gear box is cold? Meaning, does it getting better after you've been driving a long time?

It does get better after I've been driving for about 15-20 minutes, but this has happened to me twice before in the summer time as well.

If its only when its cold out side, and goes away when the gear box gets good heat in it, I'd say the gearbox has too heavy a gear oil in it.

That's what I had suspected, because in my B6 A4, I had a harder time shifting in the cold but never had the grinding/vibrating through my gearbox. Because my car was out of warranty I changed my tranny fluid to Redline. But because my car's still within its warranty the dealership insisted that its the right grade gear oil. I might add that it still isn't very cold up here in Canada. It's only 23 Fahrenheit

Happens to me too when the car is cold started and it's cold outside but loosens and smooths out in a few minutes as it warms up but hey, I'm in California.

Might be that someone put aftermarket transmission fluid in that doesn't meet VW spec. I swapped my fluid with Fuchs last month and have had no issues, even with the car parked all day at work when it was 12 F here. Still went through the gears like butter.

Been down in the 20's here in the AM and mine shifts just as good then as it does in the summer. As far as I know, I'm on OE tranny fluid.

Checking in from a cold climate. No issues shifting. My old B6 A4 had heavier gear oil in it, and the slow shifts were very noticeable. I'd get the dealer to swap out the fluid, or at the very least have the car sit overnight so that it can be cold started...

If i'm going to swap my tranny fluid to aftermarket, any recommendations? I've seen Redline 75W80 come up a lot in the forums.

This is working great for me:

Redline seems to have cold weather issues.
