I have been trying to figure out a clunking/squeaking noise for several months. The noise has been getting worse, and has now changed mostly to a squeak.
Check it out here: https://youtu.be/OSM9ZJleN-A
It generally sounds like it is coming from the front left 75% of the time and right rear 25% of the time. The noise does not happen under acceleration or deceleration. It seems to happen at lower speeds when turning or when weight is shifting while going straight. It happens both in gear and out of gear. It happens with the brakes applied or not applied. It is somewhat infrequent and hard to place. Sometimes it sounds like it is coming from below the shifter. I do not feel it in the steering wheel or shifter. It can't be duplicated when rocking the car. It seemed yesterday that it did not happen at all when the car was cold (25 degree weather). It started after I had driven it for a while. I posted the other day about local audi mechanics in Westchester County NY and did not get any rave reviews. I took it to a well respected general mechanic who was unable to identify the source. He greased various suspension components, after which the clunk seems to have subsided and the squeaking gotten worse. Need to drive it some more to see if that holds true.
I have replaced motor mounts, snub mount, transmission mount, and brakes. I have inspected and checked tightness of the front and rear sway bars and front subframe. I have raised the front wheels and tried the move the tires at 3 and 9 o’clock to see if there are control arm issues. Front control arms all look good. I have checked the driveshaft bearing. The driveshaft was found to be damaged and I had it replaced with a used one. I also checked the tightness of the two power steering rack bolts under the battery and by the brake fluid container.
Next step might be front sway bar bushings, but I am getting tired of throwing parts at this and would like some ideas.
Any suggestions on how to diagnose this would be greatly appreciated.
