Need Help With B8.5 Headlight Disassembly

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am needing help with disassembling my headlights. I reached out to a couple different shops to do the work but they either don't want to work on S4 headlights or I haven't got a response back from them. So I have decided to disassemble them and replace the projector lens with a clear lens among a few other mods to them. What I am wondering is if someone can tell me the best way to remove the outer lens from the headlight. Baking method? If so for how long and what temp. Or do I just go with the heat gun method? Also do I need to remove the led strips to get to the projector lens?

I did the same thing last year: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-Blackout-Look

best method for me was heat gun. you need to take everything apart to get to lens. That includes all LED strips and plastic.

    1) Heat gun or bake at 250F for 10 minutes. You only need the sealant to loosen up a bit in order to separate the lense cover.
    2) From what I remember you don't need to touch the led strip to get to the projector, but then again I've never needed to swap the projectors. Good luck!

I've done it a few times and had success using a heat gun. I had it on high heat, about 2 inches away from the sealed joint, and moved at a steady pace making sure not to stop and concentrate on any one spot (because it causes the plastic housing to crinkle/melt). After a few passes all the way around, I used a plastic interior trim removal tool (http://www.harborfreight.com/5-piece...set-67021.html) (the one in the middle of the linked photo) to gently pry the cover from the housing. I would stick the end of the tool into the joint and twist it a little to push the cover off the housing. If it fights you too much, do another pass with the heat gun and try again.
Oh, and remove all of the black metal clips before doing any of this. If possible, slide the clip off as opposed to prying it. On a couple of them, a piece of the plastic on the housing where the clip grabs actually broke off under the force of the clip being pried off. Whoops!

ive done many with a heat gun, helps if its done on a warm day, but those are hard to come by this time of year.

Do you reuse the existing sealant or did you need new sealant in addition? If so, what do you use? Never baked a light before.

Thanking of going to clear lenses, does it really make a difference?
