It popped out of gear and left me on the side of the road. My plan is to pull it rebuild it. But I was wondering what you guys would do? Do you have something better then the stock 5spd?

lol a rebuild is foolish if your on stock power. Cheapest thing would be to get a used transmission, I did that 2 times with my 97.

    Popped out of gear, eh?

It might just be the "stop screws" (aka "slider bolts") for the shifter relay shaft. One or both of them may have sheared off. This is one of the few failure points on the 01A/012 5-speed transmissions. Luckily these bolts are externally accessible and do not even require removing the transmission from the vehicle to inspect or replace.

Check out this thread and others:

This one has pictures of the bolt locations:

I should probable fix that. thanks walky.
I do not have those symptoms. with my problem I can shift fine any and all gears, it just wont catch anything if I don't touch the clutch it will grind but not ingage. like the gears are not syncing up. I am going to go put it on stands now and check and hope.

I wonder how many stock transmissions have failed at stock power? Given that plenty of people are pushing them at 2-3x power, without too many issues.

I would think it's a poor maintenance issue more than anything

Or bad shifts, or bad clutching, or an abusive aftermarket clutch...
Mine is failing and it is not from lack of maintenance but it could be due to stupid after market parts decisions I've made.

    Every gear, eh?

Pretty much sounds like the shift collars are not engaging due to shift forks not moving far enough (ie: "not shifting fine" - probably due to slider bolts) - OR you have a broken CV joint on one of the axles. If the problem was the "gears not syncing up" that would mean that you have stripped the teeth of ALL 5 gear sets, which simply isn't possible. The gears are quite likely just fine. But they either aren't being fully selected due to an internal or exteral shifting linkage issue, or one of the CV joints is broken. There's an outside possibility that you've broken one of the differentials (front, center or rear), but that is quite rare, especially on stock power.

I'd check all the CV joints before you bother with the bolts I mentioned. That sounds more likely to me. Safest way is to put it on a lift or jack stands (all wheels lifted) then put it in 1st gear and see what parts are spinning.
