    B5 manual swap questions

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have read the various swap threads, but couldn't seem to find exactly what I want to know. I will swapping a 2001 1.8t tip to a 01a 5spd. I want to know if I need a manual driveshaft, or if the tip one will work?
The majority of info I found is for 01e swaps, which I understand why that rear diff and driveshaft has to happen. It's being rwd converted, so final drive is irrelevant.

Also, does anyone know for sure if the c5 a6 aluminum uprights are the same as b5 s4? I have a deal on some, but only want them if hp2's/17z/18z calipers will mount to them without expensive adapter brackets. I know that they bolt to c5 s6 and rs6 uprights.

Any help in the right direction is appreciated

I believe the uprights are the same. You may need a different lower control arm. I would look into that more. But good find on the aluminum ones! Good luck with the swap too. Such I could help with that.

Automatic drive shafts are definitely different. The a4 manual drive shaft has to be used with the a4 gearbox. I'd you use the 01e you will have to use the drive shaft from a b5 s4. The c5 uprights are not the same as the ones on the s4, but they are almost identical as the aluminum uprights that are on the 2000 s4. You can use them and they will bolt up to your a4. Good luck.

I know that they bolt up and fit, and I know I need different lower control arms as the balljoints are different. I would be getting the arms as well.

I know that 01e has to use its respective driveshaft, just didn't know about tip vs 01a.
And I know that the uprights bolt up, just want to know if the caliper mounting is the same as S4 uprights, like if HP2's are direct for to the knuckle?

You need front driveshafts, prop shaft from a manual, manual shift box and linkage, drivers side transmission mount bracket from a 5 speed front wheel drive Passat (I have the part number somewhere.) And a couple other small things. ECU and cluster can be coded to manual.

I did the swap on the same year vehicle. You'll need a 5spd driveshaft since the legnths are different. Also C5 A6 uprights are the same and will fit an HP2/17z caliper. I had a C5 A6 that came with Hp2's stock. As Bruce said, make sure you get the drivers side transmission mount bracket as well, I got mine from a 5spd 2.8.

    Past:

    - B7 avant, 3.0t swapped
    - B8 S4, Stage 2+
    - B6 S4, not stock
    - B5 S4 Clone, built motor, 2871r

Seeing as both the B5 S4 and C5 A6 were equipped with HP2 calipers, I would say yes, the HP2's will bolt to the C5 A6 aluminum uprights. You can use aluminum uprights from the C5 A6 or the B6 A4 on your B5 so long as you change all the necessary related parts. Do note if you get the C5 A6 4.2 uprights, the hub is offset some amount for a slightly wider track. And the B6 A4 uprights have a slightly different wheel bearing location (vertically), which I believe will lower the front ride height a bit (unless you compensate with coilover adjustment).

front axles aren't necessary when the center diff is welded, and i know about the trans mounts, i have a v6 driver side mount. i have vagcom for any coding i need, although my spare awm ecu is from a 5-speeed car.

ok, i just wanted to know for sure that i need a driveshaft. the person finally answered me and said that the uprights have hp2 calipers on them as well as b5 s4 rotors, so that cleared it up for me too. I appreciate the response though.
