Opinion on price for used RS4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been looking around for a while now trying to find the right RS4, and then about two weeks ago one popped up at a dealership about an hour away from me. The first obvious huge plus is that the car is an hour away so I can go see it, and won't have to pay for shipping. The second is that I can trade my car A4 in towards it. I already saw it on a lift and test drove it, the car is in very good shape. It has 88,000 miles over two owners, and the dealership has all the service records back to about 45,000 miles. All maintenance items were done except for carbon cleaning. They are asking $26,930.

The issues I found with the car are:
    1) Missing belly pan (~$500)
    2) The rotors and pads are about ready for replacement ($2000 plus labor)
    3) The clutch feels like it's getting ready for replacement. It wasn't solid shifting it into each gear, the throwout bearing is probably worn.
    4) Carbon cleaning was never performed.

At first they said they would give me $4000 for my A4 because of the aftermarket parts and some damage to the bumper. I said no way and was going to walk out but they came up to $8800, which I agree is fair for the car. I told them I want them to take $1000 off the price of the car to cover carbon cleaning, and I wanted the belly pan replaced. They said no, they couldn't because of what they are giving me on my trade in. That was about a week and a half ago.

Yesterday I told them I would give them a deposit at their asking price if they agreed to replace the belly pan and give me a $500 credit towards Audi service to help cover my cost of a carbon cleaning. They still said they couldn't do either one because of what they're giving me on my trade in and the cost they had already lowered the RS4 to (before we even started talking).

Am I being unrealistic or is the dealership? I would think a belly pan would not be an issue for them. I would think the niche market on RS4s is small enough that they would take my offer but they seem pretty hardlined on the price. I want the car but I don't want to pay too much and I don't want to take it off the lot with small issues that should be fixed before it leaves.

    Thanks for any feedback.

I think it is a fair price. Then get the items you know about fixed and then you will know you have a car that is in good shape. What color is it?

Color is daytona gray with black interior. The only thing modded on it is the pedals (for some reason).

You are not asking too much of them, they are confident that you'll break at this point. Stick to your guns. I would ask for the belly pan and insist that they perform the carbon clean. They cannot honestly say to anyone, that this car is mechanically sound knowing that it has never had the carbon clean done. That is the issue that sticks out to me.

Have you looked into the thor skid plate? It's what I have on my car, and I would almost recommend it over the flimsy $500 piece of plastic.

Just food for thought. Sounds like you've found a nice RS4.

I want the stock belly pan. I'm pretty sure it has ducts to correctly direct the air flow.

It's kind of funny when you mention carbon cleaning to the sales people. They don't know what you're talking about, and act like it's not that important. I don't even care if they do it, I would take it somewhere else to have it done. I just want help on the price to account for that. And even then I would take a $500 credit towards Audi service, even though I'm looking at closer to $750 to have it done.

Thanks for the feedback though that it is a fair price. I'll see what happens this week.

Too late now, but going forward- do not mention that you have a trade-in until you've already negotiated the price of the new car.

I looked at the one your talking about at the audi dealership..Looks clean and priced right, but agree that they should at least meet halfway.FYI they've had that rs4 for awhile and should be willing to wiggle a little bit.FWIW i just bought a one owner that need some tlc, rear rotors, and carbon clean for low twenties.

Is this Burdick...? If it is i would just have them do the carbon cleaning easy enough and I'd tell that bald sales guy to suck it hahah.

nope it's Rochester. I had a beautiful Hungarian girl show me the car, so that was a plus. I'm also not a big fan of Burdick Audi.

You would think a dealership could just do the carbon cleaning while it's sitting there waiting to be sold, or at least do it as part of a sale. I'm not sure how strict they are with working the numbers, as far as having to report that as part of the sale and being docked for it.

I wound up buying that RS4 last week. Bought it for $25,200 plus they cut me a $1,600 check to do the carbon cleaning since it was throwing the P2020 code. So I basically bought it for $23,600, not bad.

this. you need to treat it as 2 separate transactions. they will play the numbers game (like they did/are) if you dont. negotiate the price of the purchase car, lock it in. and then your trade in. know its worth.

Great price, I've never known a dealership to sell cars then give you money back, you must have awsome negotiation skills. Typically they discount the car so you can fix the issues yourself. Great job

I was coming from 5.5hr away and work at an Audi dealer in Maryland. Got a phone call while driving up there that it was throwing the P2020 code and they would pay to fix it at my dealer.

That's awesome, congrats. I saw it sold last week. It was in really excellent condition when I went and looked at it. And I figured they would be willing to deal on the price, it just rubbed me the wrong way when they said they wouldn't budge on the belly pan lol. I told them between the brakes, belly pan, and carbon cleaning I wanted a better deal and when they said no I walked. That was about 2 months ago, though, so they were probably ready to move it when you came in. Congrats.
