Ugh...Coilpacks. Whats the flavor of the month...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I am finally down to zero back-up coilpacks in my trunk.

I have gone through aprox. 8 this year, and i dont even drive the car that much anymore.

I would just go to the pick n pull every Saturday, and grab as many as I could find. Obviously someone is beating me to the punch! Fukers!

What is everyone using now a days?

Bosch fd05 what ever plugs, gtrs.

And why the F@ck dont we have a solution yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What version are you currently running?

Here's an old thread from 2009. Clicky click ® I went through a lot of coil packs. Then in '09 I purchased 4 new "D" coil packs which at the time were the latest version for the 1.8T. As far as I know that was the last revision from VAG for retrofitting the 1.8T to address the coil failure issue.

As I'm sure you know there have been numerous threads for upgrading to coil packs specified for numerous different VAG engines. The most recent being the R8 red top coils.

For what it's worth I am still running the "D" revisions that I picked up in '09. They worked with my K03 big injector tune and are currently working fine with the F21L. I still carry numerous spares in the trunk but so far (thank goodness) they are collecting dust.

Saw mikes post, and yours post within.

I will try the the revision D's, cause why not! :)

Many confirmed failures of the R8 packs with higher boost.

Im gonna start going to the p n pulls earlier and either beat or meet my competitor. Maybe put him in a trunk.

I dont know what ones I am running (ill go check) but I think F's, but Im pretty sure they all burnt out long ago.

If you are still burning up coil packs, maybe consider using a minimum plug gap and reducing the maximum boost your setup is running. 5 psig less boost will go a long way toward stopping the coil packs from over stressing.

I've been on a big injector k03s file for about 40 thousand miles/two years. I use ngk* bkr7eix plugs and the latest revision coilpack you can buy through audi. Still chuggin.

The only time I ever replaced my coils was when I didn't tourque the center nuts on the valve cover enough. Oil seeped into the spark tubes and fried them. This happened prior to flashing my ecu.

Im at 240,xxx and have gone through a minimum of 30ish coilpacks throughout. At least 15 were junk yard/used ones.

Yes, higher boost, and larger plug gap stresses them.

The solution is not less boost and slower car.

I have had min gaps and max gaps, didnt really pay attention to if max gaps expired earlier.

The bosch plugs are a stock gap. Ive used many/all plugs in the 240 Ive driven this car. Bosch's hold up the best/no blow out.

I will just get the revision F's and see.

I wonder if you buy coilpacks through autozone, if they will keep exchanging them under warranty?

    Thats a though!

Wow! Really, why didnt I think of that years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

    I have like20 autozones in 20 miles!

All of them had tsi and r8 coils in stock. Duralast or valucraft brand, but who cares!

Just buy 2, keep 1 in the trunk, and 1 in the engine.

    I really feel stupid.

Yeah, however lacking more powerful/durable coil packs, reducing the boost 4 or 5 psig is the only way to get the current version coil packs to last longer.

FWIW, I grabbed an Advance Auto coil pack and it did NOT solve by coil pack issue. FCP came to the rescue with the R8 coils and I am back to beating the shit out of my 3.0!

Im not saying "solve" my coilpack issue by getting the cheap ones, rather they have a lifetime warranty, so just exchange them when they go bad.

Keep 1 in the engine, one in the trunk. When the engine one goes bad, put the trunk one in. Then go exchange it.

8 ignition coil replacements in under a year is quite excessive. Taking the used/junk yard coils out of the equation, I would try to figure out if the issue is with the ignition coils, or if there's something else going on to cause the coils to burn out prematurely. Are you getting enough spark (possible cracks in the ignition wire harness)? Are you running rich/lean?

I've been super happy with the TFSI/R8 ignition coils and using the appropriate spark plugs with the larger gap (BKR7EIX-11). These don't appear to have the design issues that the 1.8T coils have had. Maybe because I'm a bit paranoid, but since I'm using the Iridium spark plugs, I'll change out the ignition coils when I change the plugs. Have been a reliable setup (and maintenance plan) for the past 90k+ miles for me.

    I guess under a rock.

All 8 were def. used junk yard ones, so they all could have had 100k on them. They were just free.

I did def. search before I posted, and read your post (as stated above. I called you mike not mik). Have the same problems as seerlah, as far as still blowing. He too is running the bosch plugs, so maybe its those?

But I know Ive used those and they did not last with the -11 plugs. I think I even posted up a few pictures of how they looked after an oil change interval.

Maybe it is the car, but other than coilpacks, it runs great. No real issues in 240,xxx (knocking very hard on wood right now!!!) :)

Going to autozone tonight to pick up tfsi coils.

Now that my buddy in the parts dept. at vw has moved on, it just hurts spending money on these things.

    Thanks.

Why not just get genuine FSI coils from GAP? I think they are around $15/piece

An important aspect of running t TFSI coil packs, is that the ECU controls the "Dwell" or time energized per spark event. I believe the time energized is a little to hot for the TFSI coil packs compared to the requirements of the stock original 1.8T coil packs. If the primary current time energized is excessive, the extra power supplied to the coil packs will do nothing except heat up the coil pack primary and secondary circuits. For best reliability, the time energized settings in the ECU needs to be changed by reducing the time energized. This will reduce coil pack failures and won't reduce spark energy, but will allow the coil packs to run cooler, with less stress from high boost and wide plug gaps. "f1torrents" has posted about changing the Dwell/time energized in the ECU software. Duplicating the time energized maps used in B7 ECUs flashed to modified .bin files in our 1.8T ECUs for use with TFSI coil packs would be a place to start.
