Is it possible? Power steering delete?

I've been searching, and can't find any info on this. No, I'm not trying to get every ounce of power out of my car.. I just got word from the mechanic that my PS pump is bad, I have a leak in the high pressure line, and my steering rack is also in need of replacing. Since I'd have to take out a loan to do these repairs, I am thinking of just getting a shorter belt and re-routing the serpentine belt. This would give me time to save some money to fix the issues. I know it can be done on the VR6's and some other cars. Please don't criticize, I know it's an idiot move, but I'm kind of out of options. I drive my car 54 miles round trip to work, and I'm buying a can of CHF every week or two. Does anyone know if this can be done on the 1.8t?

just buy a shorter belt and bypass power steering pump. I did it on my car when I was leaking PS fluid. I would give you belt length but i also bypassed AC pulley.

My high pressure line was leaking too. Easy swap. A used part can be found cheap. Start with that, chances are the pump is ok.

Have you tried adding some Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak? It might hold you over until you can replace the pump/rack. My son had an 8th generation Mercury Cougar and the power steering fluid was practically pouring out of one of the seals. He added a bottle of Lucas Stop Leak and it actually stopped the leak long enough to order a new rack and find time to replace it. I was flabbergasted at how well the stuff worked. It's obviously not a permanent repair but if it gets you through the winter it's worth a shot.

After seeing how well it worked, the last time I changed my power steering fluid I added a few ounces as a PM.

Edit: And to add to Onceover's comment; If it's a hose leak and not a seal leak this stuff probably won't do anything at all. If it's a hose leak replace the hose. If it's a seal leak it may help.

I never thought of this.. It's worth a shot, thanks! I'm looking for a good used high pressure line too. Yeah, if I could get through the winter months that would be nice.

You can take the rack off and rebuild or mod to try to make it a manual rack. That would involve hacking of internal parts and packing with grease.

In regards to hydraulic lines you can get deals at hydraulic line manufacturers. They make almost anything on the spot. Google some in your area I'm sure you'll find something

In a reply to the lucas stop leak holy shit that stuff works. Stop leak is very debatable in most cases but in power steering i have had good experiences. I had a pretty bad ps leak on my first b6, i would top it off and it would start whining in a day max. Tried this stuff and had no problems for my whole time owning the car.

Hey man I know it's been 3 years since you posted this but do you still happen to have that belt info? I've tried the K060365 and it's too short. TIA
