Finally got around to changing the cam follower. Looked as if it was replaced by the previous owner at some point. My question is the wear on the hpfp. Is this something I should be worried about? Your inputs is appreciated.. Thanks.

Yeah, that thing is worn. Replace it or you may be able to upgrade internals... (Apr, jhm, etc.)

I would also inspect your intake cam.

I was considering upgrading the internals vs just replacing it. Intake cam was lightly scored. My assumption is the last cam follower was blown thru because of the wear and replaced at some point. The black coating was light worn on the follower I replaced.

Not to thread jack but what are the signs of a cam follower going bad? Ive read its not as common in the 08's, true or not?

Theoretically because 08s have the revision B cam. You won't be covered under the extended warranty, so check and replace the cam follower ASAP, if it hasn't been done.

While it's true that '08s have the rev B cam and don't fall under the extended wartanty, they are just as likely to burn through the follower.

This. I was stupid and never checked, engine completely ruined when I had my b7. Luckily I was an 07 and covered under warranty (completely replaced engine). All 08's please check your followers, you're definitely not immune.

100% damaged....Very weird wear as well. If your cam follower has asymmetrical wear on it, easy way to tell if your HPFP is bad.

If you think your PO did that, replace cam follower, HPFP, and intake cam immediately, along with a full cleaning of your oil system (dropping the pan + cleaning out the pickup tube).

The cam follower looked to be worn symmetrical but to my judgment it was replaced at some point so hard to say without knowing how long it was in there for. I bought the car 5,000 miles ago.

that pump is missing the "button". all of the HPFP manufacturers would call this pump a loss. i'd change it.

That wear can only happen if the follower has worn through at some point. Replace the pump for sure and inspect the cam lobes for scoring and wear. The thing is once they wear down some they start burning through followers super fast.

    How fast does it wear

If the hpfp hit the lobe and you only replace the follower how fast will it burn through the new follower? Every 5k 10k? dealer wanted 3k to do it. Car is worth 2k with 175k miles.

My dads 06 has never had this replaced. He's got 120k on his. At least to my knowledge it hasn't been replaced. Is that normal?

Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up finding a barely used pump with upgraded JHM internals.

That will determine on your oil level and how much damage there is. I can GUARANTEE there are a ton of people out there running new cam followers with slightly scored camshafts and pumps with tips that are a bit worn. The car will still run--there are lots of stories with people who ran the car forever with blown followers and very scored cams and tips on the HPFP that were well gonzo before the car started throwing codes and running poorly.

I'm sure there are people who look at a 2-4K repair and or all that time and put in a $20-25 cam follower every 3-5k and call it a day. By that time those shavings and shards from the blown cam are down in the oil pan where they cant come back up.

I did the follower on my 08 at 82,xxx, it had slight pitting, and I just checked it at 98,xxx and it has slight wear, I'm probably just going to change it every 25,000 miles just to be safe

My follower now has 25k on it since replacing my cam. I've actually been meaning to change it...
