C5 S6 avant with blown tranny

So the tranny in my 2002 S6 Avant finally gave up the ghost. Trying to decide if car is worth repairing. Options seems to be as follows
    1. Install used tranny - $4k keep fingers crossed
    2. Install rebuilt tranny $12k - costs more than car is worth.
Car has about 130k miles and is a little beat up - I've kept up with mechanical issues but body is a little beat up ( driven by my two teenage sons). On the surface doesn't seem to be worth the roll of the dice by installing used tranny or the $$ to install rebuilt one am I missing something.

    Thanks,

    Phil

The magic number happens when you do the work yourself, is that a possibility? Tons and tons of support here if you choose to do it. Not too many tools need.

I don't have the time to do any large scale car repair projects myself. I'd love to do a 6 speed swap as I hate the tip, what does that cost.

    Thanks,

    Phil
