One thing I'm missing from my 2011 S4 is some exhaust drama.

I'm not just talking loudness - I've made a couple exhaust tweaks to do that. I'm talking more synthetic, but awesome noises - and I'm wondering if tuners can build these in to Dynamic maps.

I've driven a GLA45 AMG and a Jaguar F-Type, and both exhibit some very cool exhaust noises and behavior:

- Pop on shift, both cars don't just fart, but have a deeper pop on an upshift
- Overrun crackle - both cars, when off throttle quickly or free-revving will have an incredible exhaust crackle. It's entirely fictional (the ECU pumps a little bit of gas into the engine to make the sound)

Can any of these features be added to our cars with tunes? I think B8.5 cars have either ECU or exhaust tuning changes that add SOME crackle, but not nearly what is "in vogue" at the moment.

To be clear - I'm NOT looking for hardware changes, as I think what I'm asking requires ECU tweaks.

I used to get the occasional pop every few hard drives from the S4. Was not enough. Upgraded to the AMG only because I test drove one and the pops and crackles sold me. The F type R has the most but they are purposely engineered in.

I also got a couple hour ride in APRs Supercharged R8. We did a bunch of races against the RS7. A day Ill never forget!

I think because the stock exhaust is so restrictive you wouldn't hear it even if tuners tried. It might be worth trying on a non-stock exhaust but with no hardware changes it won't happen.

Agreed,

I did the X-Pipe mod and I hear it sometimes now. But its faint and wish my car had some loud backfires sometimes, But I have no say with a stock exhaust.

I think if our cars were turbod it would be different.

For my car I think its just the nature of huge displacement and an exhaust engineered to echo the stuff going on in the combustion chamber. In the Jaguar F Type its ECU telling injectors to dump some fuel into chamber to force the excessive pops that thing makes.

Not sure why but free up any exhaust on a late 90's or early 00' chrysler/dodge and it will pop like mofo

I agree with this one! Definitely makes a car seem more mean and spirited. I will give one thing to SRT-4 owners and it is the fact that those cars pop and crack ridiculously. I really wish our cars did it!

Just buy an S6, throw a catback on it, and be done with it.

The off-throttle crackles are what get me all jittery inside...that's why I love about my Macan Turbo and Boxster Spyder. The DSG farts are awesome, but some crackle would be sweet!

What year Spyder do you have? I spent some track time pushing a Boxster GTS and really enjoyed it...
I'd love to have the latest Spyder and have even found several online for sale...!
But just don't have the garage space for a 3rd car right now :(

SRT-4's are pretty cheap these days.

Just get one of those if you want noises :P

Don't see any reason why it couldn't be tuned in. I left my WRX and STi that I did my own tuning on rich right at the top of the RPM band where my shift point was as well as at a few off throttle positions and got lots of pops and crackles.

Edit: Though to be fair it's probably not ideal for maximum power. By how much or how little I don't know.
