80,000 miles bad engine input needed!

New member here, looking for some input! Picked a 2010 Audi a4 at a really price from a friend. They only downside is there were some obvious engine issues.

His Independent mechanic states "overreved engine causing valves in cylinder #4 to bend, low compression"

Dealer states "rocker arm came loose, causing valve to dropped causing damage/scoring to cylinder #4"

Not sure who to believe but I know I have 2 options. Pull the head and inspect current motor for damage (known for having oil consumption issues stage 1 performed- which is a bullsh*t procedure in my opinion), or swap in a lower mileage longblock.

1st time working on an Audi most of my experience comes from the Honda (b series), sr20, and 1jz/2jz platforms. Let me know what you guys think!

Either route, you are going to be tearing the stock engine apart, right? Go ahead and pull the head on this one to see what the damage looks like. That will give you more information to decide if it makes mores sense to rebuild or replace.

Possibly doesn't necessarily have to be a project I'll keep. If I swap a good condition long block, I might just turn it around. Beautiful cars but some of the reliability issues bother me.

I've got 97K on mine and have owned it since 35,000. Only fixes have been stage 1 oil consumption and front wheel bearings. I use about a quart of oil every 5,000 miles, and that would be less if I didn't give it the beans so much.

It's been stage 2 tuned for 20,000 miles now and runs super smooth.

Pull the head and check for cylinder/block damage.

    If damaged replace the motor.

If not, determine if you plan to keep the car. If no, replace head and move on. If yes and you're worried about needing Stage 2 oil fix in the future, replace the motor.

Great feedback from everyone, thanks! Looks like I'll be pulling the head on this one. Tried searching for a factory service manual for a day but the only recommendation I get is to find it at
