    Question about CV boot grease

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My inner CV boot came off on one end, the shop said it was "cracked" but I do not see any damage. I am going to put it back on with a new clamp. Is this part of the boot supposed to be filled with grease? If so, how full?

You might as well disassemble it fully, clean and inspect the balls/housing surfaces. You might want to get a new seal and pack of grease.

he's saying since it's opened up, disassemble the CV joint, clean the cage, inner part of joint, bearings, repack with your new grease, and use a new single-time use clamp to close it up. makes sense since it's already open. may reveal something ie the reason the boot opened up. could fail again if there's an impending issue that isn't addressed. there's a few DIY guide on this. pretty straight forward process that takes 15-20 minutes.

No this is not the same axle, this is the OEM one that the shop told me was ripped, then I replaced it without inspecting it with an Empi that popped a day later. Now I'm going back to the OEM, I am rebuilding it as you guys recommend just want to know if the boot needs to be completely filled with grease.

Ok, clean it first and look at some of the packages they supply in CV boot kits to get an idea of just how much grease to use. Not super critical, but don't pack it full, make sure some is on both sides so nothing runs dry at first.

If you don't have Bentley or something similar, I suggest getting one. It tells you the amount of grease along with capacities of a bajilion things.
