Just picked up my '12 A6 Prestige - X pipe or exhaust options

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey I will be looking into going stage 2 however in a few months (Spring or early summer) I would like to get an exhaust or do an x pipe to add some bass to the exhaust note.
Has anyone run an x pipe and removed their center resonator?

Is the 8 speed tranny the cause why we do not have an exhaust system besides Stasis (mixed reviews) ; AWE (more expensive than my planned dyno tune and pulley upgrade) and milltek only gave the s6 love.

I haven't heard any clips of the magna flow exhaust that is significantly less than the AWE option.

    All feedback and soundclips welcome.

    Thanks

Honestly - we have had such great luck with the AWE Tuning system that we HIGHLY recommend it! The overall fitment and quality is superb and you just can not go wrong with exhaust note! If you want, you can just go ahead and do the exhaust without the resonated downpipes however you will notice some drone inside the cabin (due to the 8 speed tranny) and upgrade to the downpipes down the road to eliminate the drone!

I just installed a custom magnaflow exhaust using the same resonator and mufflers that come with the complete system. With 2.5" piping I spent less than half of what the complete bolt on system costs except no stainless piping and not mandrel bent. It sounds pretty much the same as the sound clips I've heard, but there is a very deep drone in low rpms. This tone is probably something that can't be picked up on sound clips.

Overall I like the sound, but may add some resonators to the downpipes in the future to kill the drone. But for the 500 bucks I spent I'm not complaining.

You can get a new magnaflow for about 750 bucks. From what I have heard, it sounds great and doesnt have any drone issues either

FWIW - I had the Magnaflow system on my 2012 A6 3.0 and while it did provide some well needed deeper tones for the exhaust note it had an awful drone in the 2,200-2,800 RPM range. I think the full system was around $1,200 without install direct from Magna. I am getting a 2016 A6 next week and will go AWE non res to start as i have heard the drone is much much more manageable. If needed will go resonated downpipes down the road if drone is bad. I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" and while you can save considerable money on Magna vs. AWE, I think the results are much better from everyone i have spoken to in regards to the AWE system.

Wow, the AWE sounds awesome! Thanks for the video. I'm a bit newer to the tuning aspects of exhaust, but what does "Drone" mean?

Exhaust drone typically happens when you are at a constant cruising RPM where the exhaust resonates (vibrates in a frequency) and as a result gives off a hum/noise, which to me it sounds like someone blowing over the top of an open beer bottle but it's the largest beer bottle ever and in your car!

Ah, thanks, that makes sense. Yeah, I could see why that's annoying.

Alex - not sure if you've done enough installs to compare, but is the slight drone any better on the A7 vs. A6? I'm considering it for my A7, but just have not been able to hear it in person to determine if the resonanted DP's are needed. I've tried a Stasis on the A6 in the past and was not pleasant, although sounded great at full throttle or from the outside.

Thank you for all the responses. Definitely gave me some things to consider.
I have to decide if I want a lot or a little bit of sound.

For the price of these cars, pinching pennies on the exhaust is just not what you want to do. Get a properly designed system from a good tuner, or stay stock. I have no plans to modify my S6 exhaust for two reasons. Firstly, the B&O sound system is so amazing that I really don't want anything interfering with the music, and second, I do have the ripping exhaust note of the Cayman for when I am in that mood. If this was my only car, however, I would get a proper resonated system and call it a day.
