    Mechatronics issue

Looking for a little help here....

    I've got a 2010 S4 with roughly 50,000 Kms on it.

When the engine is cold it will surge (about 200 RPM) in stop and go traffic. I will come to a stop and it will jerk forward unless my foot is firmly on the brake (does the same in reverse).
At normal operating temperature it's fine, but this is an extreme annoyance in the morning for the first 15 minutes.

I took it to Audi yesterday and they said that I need a new mechatronics unit and wanted to charge me $4500 (CAD). No codes came up and they said that the work doesn't need to be done as it shouldn't have any negative long term repercussions.

My question is this: Has anyone else had this issue? If so - any cheaper suggestions? Or do I just live with it as it's not worth 5K to me to fix.

    I have a 2012, have had a gearbox Malfunction a few times.
I am not under warranty so I bought the Mechatronics repair kit from ECS Tuning.
Going to try the fix tomorrow and ill be posting on how hard, and how much time it takes to do the repair.
And also how it acts after the repair.

I wonder if the Mech Repair kit would allow for a reset of the Launch Counter?

It's all done and back together. Not a bad job at all.. It took about 3 hours total start to finish. I just had my 35k mile service done so the DSG fluid was fresh. So I drained it into 2 clean gallon jugs and had to buy 1 more quart to top it off. So far she seems to be shifting great with no issues. Time will tell but if you buy the repair kit from ECS Tuning and do the work yourself even buying all new fluid I can't see it costing you more than $600 to do the job. The fluid is $38 a quart.

Congratulations to a job well done! Is there a DIY guild to this when you bought the kit?

I would wait until the annoying warning lights start flashing and beeping every second until it's fixed. Unless you have the cash and want to fix it immediately.

Carlos and his team is awesome. Tell them Rudy /w the S4 recommended their services. PM if you are interested and I can tell you EXACTLY how much they charged my warranty company to do the mech unit service. They found a cheap option out of the UK for the repair kit (much cheaper then here in North America, shipped). I need to check the invoice in my car (at work right now), especially with the weak CDN to US exchange.

    They did this :

The most expensive part was the labor, but at least you know they did it once before, and the car felt phenomenal after getting the work done. As Bill mentioned, this is the best way to go.

No instructions with the kit. ITS real easy though.
I'll give a quick run down.
If you have a lift it would be easier, but could be done on jack stands if you had to.
    1. Lift car up.
    2. Take plastic splash pan down
    3. Remove the x brace, or what ever its called. There is a bolt on the top of it that holds a line, so make sure to remove that.
    4. Drain fluid from pan, drain plug in the bottom of pan, fill plug on the side of the transmission on drivers side.
    5. Remove the transmission pan bolts, set a side.
    6. Unbolt the lines going into the side of the transmission, pry out gently, they are o-ringed, I put a spacer in between the lines and transmission to keep them out far enough to pull down the Mechatronics unit.
    6. Pull out the filter.
7.. Remove only the 6 bolts that hold up the Mechatronics unit, they are the six smaller head bolts.
    8. Pull down on the Mechatronics unit and set it on a clean work area. I used the box that the repair kit came in as it is messy work.
    9. Unplug the 2 electric connections and un screw the bolts that hold the 2 plastic pieces that you are replacing. Remove these now.
    10. Replace the green seals that you see now and the kit does come with new ones.
    11. Put on the new 2 plastic units and push down firmly to seat them. Put the new screws in that the kit does come with and tighten. DON'T forget to plug both of these back in now.
12.there is 4 hooks on the Mechatronics unit, must be solenoids I guess so when you put this unit back up now make sure all 4 hook into the ones inside the transmission, my first attempt I only hooked three so I had to pull it back down and try again. Second time worked, got all 4.
    13. Put the 6 bolts you took out back in, push the lines back in and make sure they seat, put filter back in, plug back in the electrical connection, then put the pan back on. Your now ready to put everything back together.
refill the fluid till it starts to come out the fill hole.
Start car, go through the gears with foot on brake. Get the transmission temp between 40 to 50 degrees c and check the fill hole and see if the level is still up, if not put some more in and finish up putting everything you took off back on.
Now your ready for a test drive. JOB WELL DONE IF SHE SHIFTS GREAT..

I know - seriously what are the chances:)? Doesn't look too good at Audi when 2 guys are there with the exact same issue. I can't believe there wasn't a recall with such a high rate of failure.

If enough people complain, there's always a possibility that Audi will do something about it. Although, with all of the Federal emissions nonsense going on, they have bigger fish to fry.
