SD card issue in 2016 A6

I previously had a 2013 S4 that I used the very same SD card in and the MMI was able to correctly play and see all songs loaded on the SD card. Flash forward to the A6, about 60% of the songs are not being seen by the MMI. The file structure was the following: All music in one folder then one additional folder that acted as a playlist. I figured maybe the newer MMI had an issue with that directory structure so I put all MP3 and MP4 files directly on the SD card with no additional folders and what I believe to be the exact same songs are still not visible in the car. Could it be the file types, the car, the sd card? I'm curious as to why it doesn't work because it worked perfectly fine in the S4 then immediately had the issue in the A6.

I have 2 to 3 folder structure on my SD and the files play fine in my A6. I don't have MP4 files but MP3 and FLAC works perfectly. Do you have another SD card to try ?

Another SD card was my next move I didn't have a spare one so I figured I'd try and narrow it down before getting another one. I'll have to give that a try today.

Have you tried reinserting the card? Or switching sources back and forth?

I've had instances where MMI suddenly won't read it even though it's read the file fine on many occasions. The file name on the Playlist shows up but says it can't find the file. I will usually pop the card out or switch back and forth from radio to media and it usually sorts it self out.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah I've tried swapping back and forth between the two SD slots to no avail. I went out and got another supported SD card and it appears to have the same problem. I've noticed there's a very large chunk of music missing. It goes from titles A to L then from L skips to Z and even then there's songs missing in between aside from M to Y.

Seems like I had an issue that was kind of similar. I have my music setup exactly like you did (for my S4: All music in one folder then one additional folder that acted as a playlist). Initially, when I inserted the card I had missing music. I double-checked my songs and I found some invalid characters that seem to have malformed a couple .mp3 files. Once I fixed those it started working. My suspicion is that I had some single quotes ( ' ) that were the culprit but I'm not positive.

Not sure if this is your problem but it might be worth a look.

Thanks for the suggestion, I've looked at some of the missing songs and they appear to be correctly titled. I even went as far as removing the folders and strictly just have all the songs directly on the SD card and that seems to have made no difference. I've done everything short of visiting the dealership but it looks like that's my last option.

Well I seem to have figured it out in case anyone else runs into this issue. It seems as though the MMI on my 2013 S4 did not consider the SD cards root directory as a its own directory so you were able to put all your songs up to the max medium limit with no issue. Now on the 2016 A6 the root directory counts against the directory max (1,000) and not the medium max (10,000). I had 2200 songs to be precise so when they were all on the root directory of the SD card it only saw up to 1,000 of the songs hence 1200 the missing songs. By splitting them into 3 folders it now recognizes all my songs. Kind of odd that they went in this direction since it was much more convenient that I was able to have all 2200 songs on the root directory of the SD card and my S4 read every single one fine but I'm glad I figured it out and have all my music back. Hope this helps!

That is an interesting fix. Thanks for sharing!

    2018 Q5-SD card issue fixed!

Hello and thank you for your message. This was exactly my problem as well in my 2018 Q5 with the SD card. Placing my MP3 files in individual artist folders on the card (about 3900 songs) - that worked fine. MMI could see all the folders and songs, but cannot do a 'global shuffle' on ALL songs this way. Putting all the songs in one folder also does not work - MMI only reads 1016 songs (but you can now shuffle all those songs). Putting all the songs on the root of the SD card also does not work, only 1016 songs read. But...like you mentioned ...creatiing 3 folders on the card and placing about 1300 songs per folder - that works perfectly. ALL songs are recognized and I can at least shuffle per folder now. Thanks again, this is a good workaround.

I had a 2010 Q5 previously and there was a limitation on max folders/songs on SD card but at least you could shuffle ALL the songs on the card with hundreds of folders created.
