    A4 2.8 repair or 2.7tt Swap.

    Hi,
Got an oil leak on the left bank of my 2.8 V6, which i believe after changing the rocker cover gaskets, is the Cam Chain Tensioner.
The little b*stards are about 20 quid, but unfortunately, require taking the whole top of the engine apart. unfortunately I dont have the space or knowledge for that so asked a couple garages. they all quote £500-£600. Shit.
    These are the little gaskets.

So, as I have a niggle list of things I wanted to change in the future, I have considered swapping for a 2.7tt.
Here's why, (Please dont say just buy an S4, as i got a very very good deal on my B5.5, it has top spec, low mileage and its already insured taxed tested ETC.)

    So on the niggle list.
Slightly spongy clutch, it doesn't slip unless you change gear to drastically so wanted to change at some point.
Always wanted more power an was considering supercharging, but the only kit is thousands, story for another day.
slight hole in the down pipe that blows a bit. ( annoying )
slight smell of fuel, i think from downpipe, or perished line.
Either way i can solve all these with a engine swap to 2.7tt, with the bonus off added power.
seeing as i was quoted £600 to repair to where it is, and i have a friends garage in newcastle that can put a 2.7tt into mine for £300 providing i bring all the parts.
so, what are peoples thoughts ?
Also does anyone have a detailed list of what it takes to put the 2.7TT from a C5 A6 Allroad into an A4 B5?
    Cheers

Swapping to an s4 motor may not solve your oil leak issue... Muahahaha

But hell that sounds like a good plan. Love the s4 motor

That's a bit much for that sort of job. Ask around to other places.

I would say the 2.7tt swap into your A4 is not the solution. This type of swap, although doable, will only bring more issues to the table. Pay the 500 quid for the repairs, and don't look back.

You don't have the space or knowledge to replace the cam chain tensioner, but you do for an engine swap?

What I don't get is why the guy offering to do the swap for cheap won't fix your engine for cheap!?

How would swapping the 2.7t solve the oil leak problem? As others have stated, the cylinder heads are nearly identical

I haven't asked him for that job, he is a garage that specialises in engine swaps and recon engines, id be bringing him an engine and all the ancillaries and he quoted £300 labour. I have since asked around and had few other prices all around £500 with £200-£250 labour.
I priced up the parts to be £250-£350 depending on make etc, The quote for the swap is only cheap as its only labour. although it will be worth asking thanks.

Im tracking down a couple of Recon engines out of the C5, and while its on the ground and not in the car, it can be looked at and filters and oil seals changed, that was my thinking.

i wont be doing the job, i have found a garage that can do the swap, as long as i bring all the parts.

oh really, what sort of issues would come up ? i though as it was the same block and heads etc, that with a little rearranging there wouldn't be too much to go wrong ?

Thanks for the responses guys, just trying to figure out whats the best to do, i want to keep it for years, and long term plan would be to create a kind of RS4 Limo sort of thing.
    Cheers.

So wait, you would rather pay thousands on a reconditioned 2.7T and pay the 300 quid to out it in but can't pay the extra 500 quid and change the CCT+gasket?

Unless your motor blew up, I'd say keep your 2.8 and go.

5-600 pounds for a tensioner seal is an insane price, that guy is trying to hose you. I would find another shop to do the work. As others have said a 2.7 won't fix anything and cost more
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!

Get a little more experience before doing a swap like that, even if you payed someone to swap it in, it will have problems here and there afterward being 15 years old and thats something your going to want to try and do yourself to offset the cost of the new engine/parts.
