Staring a new ad campaign today for the RS8

didn't even know they were coming out with one until I got in to work this morning. Knew before the holidays that I was coming back to do an Audi R8 commercial but didn't actually know they are coming out with an RS8. Will get my first viewing this week. Just arrived off the boat.

Not into the R8 but this may just sway me.

So you are saying the RS8 is a tier above the R8? I would have guessed it was the highest tier of the A/S8.

Seems like they had the R exclusive badge reserved for their dedicated sports/super car series -- this just seems confusing now.

Agreed. I was not aware of this model until I saw this thread. If someone would have told me Audi was coming out with an RS8, I would have thought they were talking about the sedan.

Audi have started selling an S8 Plus but have been at pains to say it's not an RS8 it just an S8 with more power.

Just rumors probably, but I'd heard from someone that works at AoA that they hadn't abandoned the idea of the turbo V8 package in the R8. Last I heard it was a cooling issue.

Again, rumors. who knows. I can't see Audi using the moniker RS8 though. The S8 Plus is the higher output S8, but they wouldn't strip that car down to be an 'RS', as it is a limo. And the RS8 terminology wouldn't make sense for the R8 because they already have a standing naming convention that uses a suffix like v8 v10, GT, V10 Plus etc.

I could see cooling being an issue. The R8 LMS I worked on in the World Challenge series had overheating issues at Mid-Ohio where it wasn't even all that hot out, and any modification we made to the door blade scoops made a pretty big difference in engine bay and coolant temps. A smaller V8 would help, but then turbo charging would introduce a lot more need for cooling with the intercoolers it would require. I know other companies have done it, but maybe Audi was happy with the power and performance of the V10 as it was/is. A roots style blower would probably be easiest for packaging, and they would probably be able to fit an air-to-water radiator somewhere to intercool the supercharger.

Well that article is almost 8 years old and also verifiably wrong in other areas (see TTRS). I was literally having this conversation about RS cars over lunch only to find this discussion shortly after -- fantastic how that worked out.

It could just be they are testing the new 2017 R8 already announced but not yet available, and it could have been a misunderstanding. Maybe someone said "This is LIKE the RS of the R8 model..." or something to that nature.

OK, I was given incorrect information by my superior. The car is an R8+, There will be no "R" version of the R8. I went back and forth with a few peeps about the naming of the cars and I looked the fool as I was given incorrect information.

Anyways, the car arrived yesterday and, although I'm not a fan of the R8, I actually liked this on so much that I would buy one if I could afford it. I only got a few specifics of the car. It's a replacement for the R8GT. Unlike the GT, it has a bump in power. Also the interior is insane. Diamond Tuck Alcantara ceiling, the new MMI like the Q7 has, where the dash board is like a tv screen. Carbon sides have been divided intto 2 pieces, which I actually like better. The car is a little more edgy with sharper lines and the V10 exhaust barks like a Jag or RRSVR. I'm not a fan of the V10 sound but it sounds great.

The car caretakers took the car out of stage and floored it in park, like they were going to do a launch control and woke up the entire Universal Studios back lot. They kept the pedal to the floor for about 5 seconds.

That sounds nothing like an R8 GT (Alcantara etc.). The GT is stripped isn't it?

The + has been around for a while. This is pretty incredible...motor trend this month reviewed the new +.
