    Question Gas Smell (ack!)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Everyone -
Just picked up a single owner 08 s6 which is in excellent shape (including a warranty!). The manifold was replaced by the dealer some 20k miles ago along with a carbon clean. She's running great, but now a gas smell. I first only noticed the smell from outside the car when parked in tight quarters; i.e. inside with little ventilation - now occasionally when driving, especially when going up steep (very steep) hills.

I can smell a fresh gas smell at the driver's left top of the bay when revving. The smell linkers around the parked car for awhile after stopping. It's not extremely strong, but noticeable.

Is it possible to easily confirm it is NOT coming from the manifold? I circled the area in green below that seems to have the strongest smell. Didn't notice anything around the injectors.

Taking to the shop tomorrow so any advice would be appreciated!

    Gas Smell (ack!)

Our cars use high pressure fuel pumps so a leak in the lines should be easy to locate. IIRC the fuel lines run along the frame on the driver side and up. So it is possible you have a fuel leak in the lines in the engine bay. I would visually inspect the lines and fuel rails for any leaks.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

The best fuel supply diagram I can find is below since I don't have a manual yet. I found it on http://www.jimellisaudiparts.com/. Pretty handy. Just not sure where the primary line actually comes in. Sooo much space in that engine bay!

I'm having this exact same issue, although in my '08 A6 3.2. Looking foward to hearing the feedback you get from your mechanic! And sin, should a leak be found is the fix as simple as replacing the line and calling it done, or is there a chance of other parts being damaged as a result?

It should be pretty straight forward. Find it and fix it.

If anyone else needs this in the future, mine was the fuel line connection under the pcv valve being slightly loose. The only thing else close to that area are injectors
