    Separating Diff case and trans??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I started my transmission rebuild today, and I can not figure out how to separate the diff case from the transmission.

I tried making the custom tool like in the JHM video and broke 3 different tools, tried gently prying around the case, nothing.. Any tips from someone who has done it?

Steering wheel puller with hardened washers over the factory bolts, if the two holes in the case don't line up with the tool's fingers. Throw a wheel lug bolt into the well where the bearing is, and use that for the puller rod to press against.

Ya, you just need a really strong tool. I bent a few plates and washers before getting it apart.

You have to press it off in a press or use a bearing puller.
Make sure everything from the diff housing is unbolted that
    needs to be.

It's been a year since I did mine, but I think I just put a wheel bolt in there, attached my gear puller and it popped right off. I remember I was only able to bolt one side of it to the diff case though.

I used this puller from harbor freight http://www.harborfreight.com/automot...set-93980.html

Sometimes you just need to get creative and repurpose what you have when the first plan goes to hell lol:

Want to borrow the tool i made last year?

This part is even harder to get off since a standard puller doesn't fit to get the gear off. It's hard to see what your looking at in this pic, but you'll know it when you can't fit the puller arms between the gear and center housing (not center diff housing, the center trans housing).

If grind the puller's legs, they will fit there. No need to use that extra stuff.

See I didn't have to do anything with the puller legs, they just fit. I guess it depends on the puller.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! This is exactly what happened lol, just kept modifying the tools til I got a configuration that worked. I would probably be able to do it first try next time, but that's the purpose of DIYing, right?
