Playing in the snow and DSG

I have only owned manuals so this DSG thing is new to me. I have wondered if manual mode is to harsh on the transmission/computer?

is it hard on the transmission? i would like to keep this car for a while. Also is there no way to turn the traction control completely off in the new models?

    Thanks

im kind of confused as to what you are asking?

dsg = direct shift gearbox, dct= dual clutch transmission

there is no way to turn off the dsg unless you are referring to manual mode, and if that is your concern then just keep it in auto mode.

The DSGs seem to have more reported problems when they are used/subjected to high temps or high temp situation rather than being driven in manual mode for general use. Clearly tracking a DSG has the potential for higher temps but many of the failures have been normal users that had lots of stop and go commutes especially when combined with summer heat or very high ambient conditions. Part of the stop and go related failures (per an Audi tech) is that some people want to drive it like it has a torque converter...simply creeping forward using the brake. Unfortunately these are NOT conventional automatic transmissions and when driven that way the clutch is being continually slipped...heating up the fluids and creating DSG overheating. Simply driving in manual or sport mode is not the likely cause of DSG demise, but inducing high transmission/fluid temps certainly is a/the major factor.

Well if you turn it all the way off, fun times will be had FOR SURE, but it does get a bit squirrely.

i dont think there is much you can throw at these cars that they arent designed to take, with that said some people are easier on their cars and some drive them really hard, if something breaks just know that its probably gonna be an expensive repair, but thats no reason to drive the car like a grandma does, german cars are built for the autobahn...

^this I drive the shit out of my car and it takes every single beating like a champ. I do not have DSG but I wouldn't worry if I did.

No need for babying lol take care of it, but the car can handle some abuse. It's not the hard driving that causes problems with the DSG, it's not understanding how a DSG works. Shifting it in manual mode very often reduces the risk of messing up the clutches/transmission, since you're preparing for your driving style better than the computer would (so you'll more-rarely end up coming up to a turn and slipping the clutch heavily because the RPMs are too low for the gear). That and, like someone else said, don't just let off the brake and let the car creepy constantly.

    Lets clarify two things:
    Traction Control: stops wheel spin.
Stability Control: keeps the car going in the direction of the steering wheel.

When you push the traction control button, it will turn traction control off, allowing for a lot of wheel spin...but stability control is still on. If you hold the button for 5s, it will then turn stability control off, allowing you to countersteer and slide around (well, as much as Quattro will let you slide around) For having fun in the streets and playing on the track, turn traction control off but leave stability control on unless you really know what you're doing. For playing in the snow or sliding around in the rain, you'll want to also turn stability control off for good slides.

Care free snow fun: Do your recommended maintenance. Put it in sport, traction control off-off, drive it like you stole it, repeat.
