    Bad Starter?

    What's up guys,

I'm having a starting issue with my Audi (1.8T 5sp quattro). I turn the key on, and all the lights and radio turn on, but when I try to start it, I only hear one click and then silence. This happens every time. I was able to push start it, drove it for 30 min, but the same thing happened next time I tried to start it. I want to say it's not a battery issue, and that it's probably a starter issue, but wanted to see what y'all thought first. Thanks for the help! (and i tried pumping the clutch too, but that didn't seem to work either..)

Check all of your connections between the battery and starter. That was my problem when my car was acting the same.

Yeah, bad connection is my first guess, probably at the battery. Or the battery could be bad too.

You can try hitting the starter (note-starter, NOT the solenoid) with a hammer LIGHTLY to see it it helps. If it does, you have a bad starter.

Sounds like weak battery connections to me. Take off the cables and clean everything with a wire brush. But if it's an old battery that may not help. I get five years out of a battery. Once I got seven. The cold weather definitely brings out any weakness in a battery.

Thanks for the tips guys. I hooked up a battery charger and let it charge to 100%, then tried to start it with the charger still connected, and got the same results. Same thing when I try to jump it off another vehicle. Battery terminals are tight and clean. Also tried tapping the starter with a hammer...nothing. Next thing I'll check are all the connections between the battery and starter.

If you can check for voltage on the smaller gauge wire on the starter. With the ignition switch turned to start and clutch engaged you should have battery voltage. If you do that eliminates the ignition/clutch switch circuit.

Starter issue. Most likely its the cable corroding that runs from solenoid into the starter. That was the issue on my parts car.
