    Another Winter Tire Thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone - Northern VA resident here with a set of mounted/balanced Michelin X-ice3 winter tires.

It is finally getting cold enough to throw on the winters. When I called my local tire guy to put them on, he was VERY hesitant to put them on at this point.

Looking at the weather forecast, it's getting colder and colder so I don't know. Has anyone put their set on yet?

Several people have. Some regretted it since it was mid 70's for a few days.

It's going to warm up a bit but still, I would slap them on if I had them.

Usually wait until it's calling for the first snow to slap them on.

As I don't have rradily available tools, I DID put some new blizzak lm-32 on my OEMs about 3 weeks ago. Father has a driveway with compressor and tools so I swapped based on availability.

The 70 degree Christmas wasn't too great for them, but oh well. I'd like to think that performance winters can stand those temps for a few weeks.

It's not like they are going to melt in the highway. If you are truly only driving on them for the 3 months of snow they will dry rot and be an unknown rolling hazard. Better to wear them out than blow them out. Thanksgiving -Easter is what most mid-Atlantic evo/sti people I know live by... Typical milage aging of about 5-6k miles a year. Tires will need to rotated out after about 4 years...

I haven't put mine back on yet, as I've been lazy. I keep meaning to swap them out though.

I just swapped over to annoying A/S. It's cold outside. Thanksgiving to easter is a good rule of thumb in general, but it's been so unseasonably warm.

I agree that All-seasons would be best for this weather, but it's so unusual that I'm still happy with my purchase of the studless snow tires back in october.

There's a thread in the B8 S4 forum where someone was on a set of Michelin A/S tires and just wrecked his car due to black ice.

Granted - in a perfect world, I'd have THREE sets. Summer from May - October. All seasons from October to whenever (until it gets cold). Winter from whenever - May.

I saw that. I feel bad for pyro.

To be clear, I hate A/S, but I had them laying around my garage mounted and balanced. Maybe I'll find a way to either wear them out or sell the tires.

I put my winters on my S4 last week. It has been too warm until just recently. All my other vehicles run all seasons year round.

I do this with my S4. My 18x8 Enkeis with Michelin Sport Cups are a lot of fun and they are stupidly light.

What size are they? They in good shape? You interested in a possible trade for some actual performance snows? I have a truck for real bad weather so dont feel like I need to put actual snows on the Audi any longer, but would like something on there that arent PSSs just in case I need to drive it in semi-questionable weather.

Shoot me a PM if you may want to see if we can work something out.

I'm very interested. I can double check the paperwork later today, but I'm very sure I only used them a few short months last winter, and swapped them out asap. Conti DWS 19". I'll get the size shortly.

What size and mileage estimated are your snows?

When the temps start to dip down to around 5 and below, time to slap those puppies on as you know that once the first flake hits the ground all garages will be booked full swapping out tires.
Best be ahead of the game.
We had our winters on since November and the weather has been on the mild side but we did have a couple of snowfalls and it's was a mess.
I'm in Richmond Hill, Ontario just 20 minutes of the T-dot or formerly known as Toronto.

I've got a lovely set of 18x8" OEM gunmetal winters made for the S4 that I've ran on my S5 for a year up for sale.

Anyone needs a set.. They're running Blizzak LM-60s. Excellent shape.

    So. Update -

    Winter tires installed.

Car now pulling to the right big time.

TireRack said that I should do a test that involves moving the tires around a bunch of times to find the faulty tire.

I have my 15k service coming up, and I have my wheel/tire insurance. I'm going to have them check it out. Hopefully they figure out the issue.

Yep. They were a few pounds high, but even with them all even, it still pulls.

Try getting them road force balanced. Sometimes that can identify the problem with a faulty tire.

Drove this morning in 20 plus inches (mostly unplowed) with my new happa r2s. Made my car a god damn snowmobile. Got stuck once at a red light which had a major snow bank built ul from the crossroad. Threw it in reverse, backed up 20ft to build up some speed and blasted threw.
