21" problems!! HRE or Forgeline, what to do, what to do?

I was convinced that I was going to sell my HRE's because I wasn't 100% sure the look was working for me. I threw them up in the classifieds in their crashed state. In the meantime I went ahead and pulled the trigger on a set of 21" Forgelines to have something in place. After the refinish they now look freaking amazing and I'm having second thoughts about selling them.

The HRE's have a brushed center with red paint filled logo then a clear coat finish. Inners are black with a high polish on the lip. 21x9.5 on all four corners but staggered offsets.

The Forgelines have a one off color that was specially done for this build, it's a gunmetal with a flake added and high gloss clear. Inners are painted to match the centers and the lips are also a high polish. 21x9.5 square also with staggered offsets and some concave to them.

The Forgelines look darker then they appear in the pics and when the sun hits them they look insane. Both sets are three piece all forged construction with hidden hardware.

My car is white and I'm sure both will look killer but I can only choose one!!

They aren't black they are gunmetal but look dark in these pics. I'll be selling one set for sure just not sure which ones yet. If you wanted dark wheels I told you I could of had the centers done in any color if you wanted them, I still can if you are a serious buyer. They haven't been assembled yet so it wouldn't be that big of a deal at this point. A dark tinted clear to show the brush work would look incredible.

Forgeline is just as high quality a wheel as HRE, they both source their blanks and barrels from the same handful of distributers.

I'm leaning towards the Forgelines as well, my evil and addicted mind is already churning though. I'm actually thinking about having the centers done over in a lighter gunmetal rather than the darker finish they are now.

The 20's are 843r 20x9 square et in the high 30's I believe as they aren't stamped because HRE doesn't like releasing offsets on their custom builds but they are 3 piece so they could be re-barreled to whatever you want of course. I actually have a set of 21" step lipped barrels that I used to run these on my S8 for a while. This is them on my B8 S4 and a shot of them when they were a 21" on the S8.

I'll obviously be biased on my opinion, but with that said have you considered re-powdercoating the centers to give it a new look? It would be considerably less in cost compared to buying new wheel all together but it's worth bringing that option up.

Maybe you missed it but I just had the HRE's refinished. I was going to send them back to you guys but you quoted me like $2400 plus shipping both ways, that's crazy money considering what was already spent to purchase the wheels, $10K!!!

Ahh I missed your other post with the picture before they were refinished, that's my bad! Refinishing wheels the right way to ensure it's done properly can sometimes be a lot of labor which is likely why the quote you received was higher than expected. I wish you the best of luck with your decision though!

That is a great idea!

Granted, I am an HRE fanboy, and the ones you have are not my favorite model, but I think those HRE make the Forgeline look cheap. There is no comparison.

Now finish considerations with a white car is another story if you don't like silver wheels on a white car. They look awesome on S6Express car tho.

Personally, after trying it once and regretting it, I think dark centers with polished lips looks ghetto/dated/half-assed trendy, not classy enough for S6

I like the polished lip with brushed clear centers. A lot. I think they look great on your car with brushed mirrors and polished exhaust tips. Only think I would change from the car pic is to put the classic red white and blue HRE center caps. Done. (Edit I see that you already now have them in the refinished wheels)

As to the HRE repair, from what I know of it, about 100 per wheel was for disassembly and reassembly of the three piece wheel. I am sure they intended to replace the lips (like 300 a piece) not just sand them down. They would have used clear powder coat instead of just clear coat paint. And you could have had the centers redone for a couple hundred more each, since they were already apart. And you would have retained your HRE warranty. They would have been like new. A set of curb feelers from ebay and you would have been good to go! :-)

I know, thats a lot of money with the repairs especially with your initial outlay. But if you hadn't damaged them, getting the centers refinished is really not too expensive to change up the look as opposed to buying another set. I think maybe 3 or 4 hundred per wheel total including disassembly. You could have maybe gone with some dark tinted clear on the centers maintaining that expensive jewelry like brushed forged and yet darkening them up a bit.

Too late for that now tho. Just put em back on with those RWB caps and you will be golden. And stay farther away from the curbs!!

Curbs is what happened!!! I was quoted by HRE for $300 per wheel if I wanted to send them back to them. That includes a full strip to bare metal, repair all rash and then refinish and full polish on the lips.

To me that's overkill and way too much. I have a couple other sources that can do the full repair and then polish and apply a sealant to keep the polished lips from oxidizing for $650. Thats for all four wheels.

I have the receipt for purchase from the original owner. They were part of the purchase of the car but they were indeed bought for $10K regardless of who wrote the check.

Yes I was originally quoted $300 per wheel by one of the HRE salesman. When I sent him serial numbers of the wheels he sent me the price of $600 per wheel because they were 3 piece and the centers were brushed. He thought I had a mono block wheel and just wanted a basic paint finish originally hence the $300 quote. If you'd like me to copy and paste his email with an exact quote I can do that for you.

Your car and the other S6 with HRE were my inspiration for my finish choice for my HRE. IMO, people are voting for the forgeline not because of the finish but because of the design of the alternative.

This is true in my case. I prefer the style of madyspop's the Forglines over the style of his HREs. I like brushed clear almost always, with the exception of the P101. That wheel just looks better in brushed dark for some reason.
