    If I were you, I'd be making sure the title was transferred to his name if you haven't done so already.

    In California at least, there is the form "Release and Transfer of Liability" that you can fill out or submit online. In theory [in CA] that should negate the need for doing a title transfer on-the-spot.

    A lot of people still don't do it, that's the issue. Only reason the PO of my car didn't do it was he screwed up on smog and knew I had to get it smogged and that could take a while, so he didn't complete it. Then again, he knew I wasn't going to do anything sketchy.
