So, i did a search on this and most of the results are from B7s. Was hoping to get some feedback from B8 S4 owners on this issue. Driving around today the car totally fell flat on its face while accelerating. No CEL came on and felt like massive misfires.

Here is what I pulled from Vag-Com when I got home:

The fuel pump was replaced by the previous owner. I'm thinking it might be a clogged fuel filter or maybe the pump is bad again? Anyone with experience with these codes, please chime in. I'm thinking of just replacing the fuel filter and pump.

Its both banks so I'm guessing lpfp or fuel filter. Nothing new done to your car?

Thanks for the reply, Mike. The only thing that was done recently was the new clutch a little over 1k ago. Trying to find a DIY on how to replace the pump and filter is not going well....

Also, I mentioned the CEL didn't come on. It finally came on when I hooked up the Vag-Com.

If it's the lpfp you looking to change PM me I replaced mine due to weird chirping and cricket like noises that it made at idle and it was also humming when I put my ear next to the tank but I never got a code for it. I just wanted to replace it preventively

P0089 is definitely lpfp related on the b7, ask me how I know. But I'm not sure P0087 is. I would guess hpfp instead, or something wrong with the fuel rail like said before. my car had recall done for the fuel rail before I owned it. It had a slight fuel smell when I bought it, so they redid that recall. Does this car have a pressure release valve on the rail?

Hey there. The B7 A4 platform actually had a crap hpfp. There were some aftermarket options eventually. Here are some early threads on it...

The reason I wasnt jumping on the hpfp hypothesis in this case is bc we have two hpfps and i'd guess if we had a hpfp issue it would more likely show up as a lean/demand issue on only one bank, not both. Can anyone double check my thinking on that?

I'm well aware of the B7 2.0T fueling system. I ran a stage 1 hpfpupgrade and went through 3 lpfps, and changed about 7 followers.

I was not aware that b8 platform had 2 hpfps however. That is interesting. It always seemed that the e85 upgrade kit from epl only offered one pump upgrade? Is that not the case?

hehe, yeah the god awful fuel system on the B7. Man you had your share of difficulties with it. I thought the B7 was a pita with that stuff until I had to deal with the bad pistons on the B8 lol.

You know I had just assumed there were two hpfp (one for each bank) like with the v8 fsi motors but I think you are absolutely right that they are only using 1 hpfp. In that case I guess we can throw that in the mix of possible issues too, lol.

There is only one HPFP. It's the same one used in the 2.5 TFSI. HPFP is at the engine, and LPFP is at the tank.

You definitely bring up an interesting point about the hpfp. I do notice the car stumbling on itself when I give it more throttle. Slight throttle seems fine. Anything over 1/4 throttle seems to cause a stumble/misfire. And, the previous owner had the in tank fuel pump replaced at around 28k. I'm thinking I might have the car professional diagnosed before I start spending money on things I don't need.

So, finally had the S4 fixed and it turned out to be the hpfp. For future reference if anyone comes across the P0087 code, check the hpfp.

From what the tech said, the lpfp should be operating at about 4 bar and when the hpfp kicks in I was running at 5 bar. When the hpfp kicks in it should be 10 times that. After a week I can finally drive the S again.

when I had the hpfp issue it was only the P0089 code for my car. I would definitely investigate the hpfp next.

Thanks I'm changing out both sensors. If the problem persists, I'll change the HPFP and Cam Follower.

I have successfully defeated this code.
I changed everything related to the fueling. Lol.
I changed the two fuel sensors (fuel rail and next to pump.)
    In-tank fuel pump and filter
    HPFP
    Cam Follower
Changed my thermostat while I was in there (to save on labor while I was in going to be in the area.)

I believe the sensors should be changed. I changed everything for piece of mind and so that if the sensors didn't fix the issue I wouldn't have any more down time.

I also had this pop up but it disappeared after getting scanned. Any idea if it could've just been a phantom code?
