    2006 A4 2.0T low oil pressure

Was driving last night and decided to smash the gas in manual mode and went to shift up and it did not respond right away so RPM almost went into red but i shifted up and let off the gas. As it was decelerating my oil pressure light came on, went off, then came on and stayed on. I continued to drive about a quarter mile to my house and by the time i showed up the engine sounded like it was make a very rough rattling noise. Checked the oil and the level is fine but when i start the car it sounds normal for about 2-3 seconds then the rattling sound starts. Could i have blown the oil pump? I also saw there is a sprocket and chain system on the oil system, could that have worn and chain slipped? Reason i think that is a possibility is ever since I have had the car when i first start it for the day it sounds like a chain is rattling for about a second when the car starts - only first start of the day.

Any help is appreciated. Being stranded with auto repair places closed on New Years day is no fun

Yea you broke something. Likely the oil pump or the balance shaft assembly sprocket came off or broke (sadly, somewhat common failure point).

I think the only way you're going to be able to diagnose this is to have the oil pan dropped and the pump and balance shafts checked visually.

The chain rattle could definitely have been a clue to this issue but it's hard to know for sure as our engines are pretty damn noisy as it is...

    1) don't drive your car, don't even start it anymore. You risk doing even more damage if your oil pump isn't functional.

    2) assuming you can't wrench yourself, have the car towed to a shop you trust and have them pull the oil pan and check the oil pump chain and tensioner. Make sure the pickup isn't clogged and none of the crank bearings are wiped.

Thanks man preciate the input. Guess ill wait till tomorrow when my shop opens up and get it towed there. Quite unfortunate, especially because I just had the front lower and upper control arms replaced. Any idea on what i should expect for labor hours? Whats the average labor hours for a oil pump replacement?

Based on the teardown of my engine after the balance shafts seized, the cam bearings in the head are the first to be destroyed.

It's the cost of a new oil pump that will get you. It will likely be more than the labor. You may want to start looking for a used oil pump assembly.

Its quite a lot work, when i bought the car it had a seized balance shaft, therefore the crank must of continued to rotate until the sprocket bolt snapped off but surprisingly the chain was intact, like "Charles.waite" said Do Not operate the car, the front suspension has to come loose in order for the oil pan to be removed.

    here is what i found

Ok so im getting more and more scared as i read in to this. The enitre oil pump asselbly from ECS including the "Complete balance shaft module with oil pump" is $1300 and i couldnt imagine the labor to switch that out. Also read some threads talking about the failure of that unit could cause a lot more issues with the motor and possibly even ruin it?

Unfortunately, in a lot of scenarios you are better off buying a used engine and having it swapped in unless you can do the labor yourself. You can then part out or sell whole the broken engine for a few hundred bucks.

You need to have a professional look at it, it could be your timing chain, tensioner, your cam follower or more seriously you oil pump or all together, we can only assume the worst but we cant determine what the problem is or how serious it is.

Timing chain, timing chain tensioner, and cam follower will not give you a low oil pressure light. But OP, you do need to get a diagnosis which will require some disassembly.

Sorry i missed that part where he mentioned the oil pressure light coming on, but i was referring to the noise and quite frankly if the car did starve of oil then other parts could potentially be damaged on the cylinder head.

BWT and BPG are the Audi engine code. BPY will also work but you need to swap the accessories over. Make sure the engine comes from a cvt or manual if you have a manual trans

As for finding an engine, check craigslist, ebay, and www.car-part.com

They also occasionally show up in the AZ and VWVortex classifieds.

sounds like a bad oil pump, as mentioned. hopefully there's no damage.

BTW, when did you check your follower last? my oil pump and follower failed around the same time. not sure what failed first.

sounds like a good time for 1.8t oil pump conversion, cheaper than the 2.0t oil pump and you never have to worry about it again. might feel some additional vibration though.

Got a call from the shop and he said he found metal flakes in the oil pan so he assumes damage to the engine/rod bearings. Still owe about $6000 on the car and dont quite know what to do :[ ...All help is appreciated!

how does your actual oil pump look? when mine went there was so many flakes that it clogged the oil pickup filter, but it was all from my oil pump. your engine MIGHT be fine.

Im assuming he didnt look at the pump but he said he thinks its rod bearing breakdown because the flakes are gold/copper. Replaced the oil/filter with 10-60 oil and said itll make it last longer maybe 40-60 miles or so but he thinks the engine is damaged.
