I just bought a one owner 2011 s4 with 39k miles in excellent condition, but have noticed a weird 2-1 shift when coming to a stop. It seems "harsh" in my opinion so I thought I'd ask if that's normal. Every other up/down shift is totally fine. This is in dynamic, but does it in comfort too (just a bit less since there's probably less line pressure). Also just read these trannies need to be serviced at 35k miles...true?

    Dsg question

DSG issue is normal. It makes some noise and 2-1 shift can be a little clunky in dynamic or manual mode at low speed/rpm. As for service, what does the service manual say? I don't have it on me at the moment.

Thanks for the quick reply brotha! Ahhhh ok good to hear it's normal to downshift like that. I was just browsing on here and came across a post about the service...ill check my manual and confirm.

Yes, definitely get it serviced when due, 35k is the first DSG service interval. A little pricey at dealer, probably $ 600-800 total, but not sure how much of that is DSG. When I had it done I had Audicare.

Hahaha I've already tried several different ways of stopping in an attempt to minimize it. Seems if you let it 2-1 downshift while still slightly rolling, it's not as bad.

Drove me crazy at first also. But over time seemed to find the sweet spot. Still get a hard shift every now and then but not like i did when i first got the car.

Same issue with my 2012. Really annoyed me with DC traffic.

So I did myself a favor and got the 034 Motorsport tranny mount insert. I'm not saying clunk is gone 100%, but it is most the time.

I got the eurocode insert, practically the same thing, a bit cheaper. Anyway, it definitely reduces this clunk slightly. Maybe 70% better? Don't notice it in comfort mode at all with the insert, but feel it in manual mode sometimes for 2-1 shifts.

I think I downshifted into 1st by mistake when I first got my car. Vowed never to do it again because of how "harsh" it was on the transmission. The only time I ever shifted into 1st on my 6MT A4 was when I wanted to start rolling forward, like from a red light or something. I never downshifted from 2nd to 1st. I always went from 2nd to neutral. IMHO, 1st gear is used for starting out, not slowing/stopping. Even now in my DSG when I'm in manual mode and slowing to a stop, I'll downshift all the way to 2nd but won't go to 1st. The indicator on the dash doesn't change to M1 until the car is stopped.

Time for the DSG Tune. Completely eliminates the clunk. Might as well add a Stage II while you're at it

The only other thing you may notice (I did) upon test driving the S4 initially is that it idles a little rough. Normal though.

This.. we spent weeks testing scenarios to figure out exactly when it would clunk and precisely what combinations of speed/rpm/throttle/braking caused it and then worked each of them out one by one until we were clunk free.

Even my S6 (Same transmission as a B8.5) did it with the factory calibration. I don't know why they tuned them that way.
