I'm sorry about your cat, however, FIV is generally NOT fatal for cats infected. It takes years before the viral RNA to combine with the cytoplasm. And additional years before the infected genome is transmitted. Then the virus remains dormant for many years to follow before the immune system can begin to recognize it (through damaged and decreased cell count).

Lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator was recently developed as a treatment option for cats already infected. It also has an extremely low toxicity.

We're talking 12-17 years before the cat begins to even show symptoms of the disease. If your cat is living that long, I'd say you've done an excellent job in caring for the animal.
