Stuck twice in the snow yesterday...

Sometimes I wonder how well the Quattro System works.

So to be clear it was my fault to think I could park in a uncleared snow parking spot. What happened is I got lots of compacted snow under the car and it was partially sitting on the snow. The part that annoyed me is when i tried to get out of it, only the front wheels would spin and not the rear.
I turn off ESP and TSC (Holding the ESP) for it to think about using the rear and when they barely spin (1/10 the speed of the front) and it started to get out of it. I finally needed to do some digging to help it.

But what the hell? How do I force the car to use ALL 4 wheels?

Interesting. I don't think I've had a problem getting power to all four wheels when turning all traction control off. And, I've never got stuck, but then, I don't live in Montreal either.

I too have never gotten stuck in the snow (while living in NY), except once when I tried to see if I could get myself stuck in a high amount of snow. Was only stuck for a few seconds, before I pretty much launched myself out. I did have snow tires on the car also, I'm sure that helped a lot. Are you on stock a/s tires? Either way, all four wheels should spin.

True. It involved a massive avalanche into the neighbors driveway... I only felt a little bad given they piled the shit up in front of my car when they shoveled themselves out.

That is how Torsen center diffs work. If both front wheels, (or both rear wheels) loose traction, it can't send torque to the other end. There is nothing that you can do about it.

This is odd i've never had a problem like this. Lived in Winnipeg and Edmonton went through lots of snow and never once stuck. Maybe a stupid question, but do you have winter tires on the car?

I would worried about my bumper cracking from the pressure.

I've never heard of this autosock... im looking at some reviews they say it works but 2 uses max and its expensive...

Any effects if I have my car winched from the front anchor point in the bumper?

So we have the Quattro VI on our B8s?

First part of the video. This is what happened to me but it was only the front wheels spinning. How did he manage to get all 4 to spin?

Pretty sure that's what the anchor point is for.

Nah, nothing to worry about with the bumper, the snow was kind of light so it compacted a little. No video, but I rocked it back and forth about 20x or so. Eventually just toppled the mound of snow in front of my car. We had almost 9' of snow last year and I never once got stuck to the point where I couldn't get it out unassisted.

What you can do is to put your foot on the brake real easy to force traction to your rear wheels in that situation. Only works at low speed thou, if you brake at speed you'll cut the throttle.

That must have been something to see Lambda =)

Exactly. Quattro or any other AWD system is not going to help much if you beach or high center it without momentum. Yes, you can drive or plow through snow that may be higher than your ground clearance but you have the momentum keeping you going along with traction. Once you stop and sit on top of the snow, you're going to get stuck or have difficulties getting moving again.

Traction control should apply brakes to the spinning wheels to transfer power to the other wheels.

Had no problems yesterday nor today here in Montreal. I always shovel a bit in the front and rear so I can move freely especially if the snow is dense. I too have the R2 snow tires. They're great in deep snow. So, so on ice and slush.

SDF1 is this the same car you have had the entire time or is this a new one, your B8 is always seemingly problematic. Also even if you were high centered all four wheels should be moving. AWD on the B8 is not a Haldex type system as those are front drive bias.

How well do your R2s handle on wet conditions?

Quattro in slippery, thin snow/sleet/ice = You're going to slip regardless, but fare okay if you can control the steering/throttle.

Quattro in thick, heavy snowfall = Nothing to even worry about, handles like a dream.

Where Quattro really shines is in heavy snow.
