looking to replace a dead slot on the dash with a button

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
not having any luck searching the interwebs, wondering if any of you have replaced these dead keys with buttons.

preferably with a light & backlight but at this point any leads are valuable.

Goal is to hardwire my radar detector's mute button to it. I did it in my b7 a few years ago but haven't found anyone who has done it on a Q5 yet, so i don't know if there are any buttons that fit here. I've seen S5's which come with traction control & drive select buttons, but I don't want to have any duplicate buttons on the dash.

closest hit i've found is "ESP OFF" button, which i guess might be the euro button for traction control, and no light. hoping for something better

Yes, it's a coin holder. A while back there was this guy Matt making carbon fiber fillers for it for about $ 125, but he went shady.

dude you are killing it... thanks... I actually talked to ECS first they had no idea about it or what it did. The only thing they could tell me is that if they sell it, it is a US spec part and therefore LHD. So that means it should fit properly.

Any ideas on the harness? They didn't have a part number for that either...

    thanks man!

you may also want to search http://www.car-part.com/ to see if any wrecked RS5's are near by if you can pull the switch and harness or if anywhere is willing to pull the part for you

As I recall it in fact is not a coin holder but actually the sensor to determine air temp in vehicle but everyone mistook it for a coin holder.

I saw Audis drawing of it labeled as a coin holder. It's def not a sensor.

Putting the button for the RS5 spoiler control in a car without the power spoiler from the RS5 equipped is the definition of RICE. Why would someone do that?

thanks everyone for all the help thus far. I know it may seem rice or stupid, but i need a switch and don't really care what's on it. Most likely I will attempt to scratch the label off, or repaint it, or hopefully find a button that doesn't have the spoiler on it in the first place lol. i'm not using the button for the spoiler, obviously.

more info: just found this randomly. I would love a blank button to be honest, any button works i guess but would prefer one without a nonsensical label such as the spoiler button.

either way great pictures from this page...

Maybe hard for you to understand it's just a switch .. He wants an oem looking switch to control the mute on his radar detector if it makes you feel any better the can use a sharpie and color the spoiler graphic out

I'm confused - are you trying to replace the blank switches circled/squared in your OP or are you trying to replace the coin-holder to the right of the shifter?

If u actually read his original post you would see he doesn't care where the switch is.. He just needs a switch.. I suggested the RS5 switch because it's OEM

Did you read the whole thread or did u enter with some aristocratic condescending superior attitude to exert some deep inferiority complex ?? You u read the whole thread u will realize 1) I offered an alternative button and 2) he found the buttons for the center aren't individual they are a whole unit which he wasn't interested in investing in

Lol you are so wrong. There is zero power to it, I have actually removed the part (replaced it with the ocarbon piece), it's just a piece of plastic, no sensor. It's a coin holder...

Your snarky comment referred to me not reading the original post, not the entire thread. I simply replied back with where I got confused.

Regarding your dimestore psychology, I would suggest that you redirect your efforts towards the study of grammar and syntax.

Did you even understand the Francis reference (granted I should have said "lighten up")?

I said the button was rice when it did not have a purpose, as was shown in the A4 video.

To the OP - apologies that my comment about mounting said switch to an A4, without any purpose other than to have an extra button that lights up, caused your thread to derail. Good Luck with your hunt for the best solution

found this on the interweb. quite a few variations. i believe the buttons are momentary switches, not on/off so it should work fine for at mute button.

The button in the video is a TT spoiler mounted on an A4 .. It's actually functional but again here you are making judgement before doing research .. Once again thanks for your contributions to this thread you certainly have helped the OP with his original question .. Thanks again

i want the ocarbon piece haha. how much did that run you, if you don't mind me asking? i wonder what other pieces they have, i don't see that one listed on their site.

no offense but lets keep the drama out of this thread. also no offense but i'm not terribly worried about someone i don't know's opinion. lastly this is going in an SQ5 just posted in b8 sections for some alternate input.

i started out wanting one of those buttons. was having a terribly tough time finding them, well, now i know, because they are not sold by piece. it is a whole module. SO, the RS5 spoiler switch or Q5 on/off switch that fits down by the shifter seems like a different and fun option.

Yeah i think they are all momentary, as they do not have a recessed position. the LED is just voltage controlled so the detector sends a signal for when to illuminate it. Damn, i need 3 down from the top on the left!! Then I could use that auto start stop button, and nobody would know the wiser. where did you find the picture? I'm going to try to harrass them for the driveselect, blank, startstop piece haha. startstop is my #1 choice for both positions as it would be less... how do you say it... "rice"... lmao.

but i have only found the lower start stop to be RHD configuration, so I think if i go with the coin slot I will have to go with RS5 spoiler button. If i could get a lead on the one 3 down on the left's part number that would help. just need a harness then. also routing wiring to the coin tray area is going to be slightly more work than just routing to the back of the console.

dude i think he's saying the A4 has a spoiler cut out of a TT, uses the RS5 spoiler button.

either way its irrelevant to this thread. sorry but i am looking for real answers and don't want the people with those answers to not post or read through it because of this petty banter
