Coolant hard pipe to t-stat housing.

I'm replacing various coolant hoses and o-rings. The exploded picture view had shown a o-ring between the hard pipe and the t-stat housing. Separating the two i did not find one. I was thinking maybe it shot off the pipe and i just didn't see it. Can anyone confirm if there is an o-ring between the two? Thanks!

The o-ring is still on the pipe. It's just completely flattened from years of good service.

You should definitely replace it. It is 20x3mm, VW/Audi part number N90365302. it is actually an exact match for the o-ring included with the "J-Plug". I highly, *highly* suggest you use only genuine VW/Audi o-rings in the cooling system. Pay the extra dollar or whatever. The cheap aftermarket ones look fine, but are often made of the wrong type of rubber and can get brittle, crack and fail in 20 or 30k miles. Ask me how I know this.

The hard pipe o-ring is also included in the B6 1.8T Thermostat kits available from some vendors:

This is actually NOT an o-ring as I was also interested in replacing it. It is more like a rubber seal. You will see that when you take it off and then put the o-ring on there is still a lot of play and it does not fit correct.

you have to find a correct sized o-ring. once you install the hard pipe the o-ring smushes spreading out. you'll need an o-ring of the correct inner diameter as well as thickness otherwise it will not create a proper seal.

Um. An o-ring is a rubber seal. lol

Get one at the Audi parts counter. It will fit and seal up real nice-like.
