JHM Overdrive and Stage 2 without Supercharger Pulley

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've been stage 1 for the life of my car(5 years) and am definitely tempted to go stage 2, however, with crank pulley failures becoming more common it seems a more cost effective strategy may be to go JHM overdrive and stage 2 software.

Is anyone running this setup? Also does anyone know what tuners will install their stage 2 software without sale of one of their pullies? I have Revo tuning who I believe will sell the update but I think some other tuners will not. I'm definitely not looking to "double up" with both a supercharger and overdrive crank pulley.

I've been running this setup since 1,200 miles. Have about 6k miles now. Got the crank pulley before it came out. 1st customer with it :). JHM did the install and it came out a bit cheaper since the labor didn't take as long as a supercharger pulley install.

Did you still have to purchase APR's pulley to get the stage 2 software?

Been running this setup for a few months, its been working well and Revo let me flash to their 1+ file without buying their pulley.

    Edited:
We just installed the overdrive pulley on a friend's SQ5 and APR forced him to buy their pulley to flash to stage 2.

@LINDW4LL - No, JHM took care of the supercharger pulley so I got credited for it.

This is good info; so it looks like Revo and APR are selling stage 2 without a pulley sale now.

Out of curiosity how how long does the crank pulley take to install? One of the downsides for me was that to install the crank pulley the shop wanted the car basically all day to let it cool and then do their thing and as it's my only ride wasn't very feasible.

Wait so you dont need a smaller S/C pulley if you have the jhm overdrive pulley?? I didnt know that one. Is the diameter smaller on the jhm crank pulley? I never knew or looked into that yet

Maybe 6 hours on the first try, got the car back together and realized I left a bolt out of the bumper support

How does the car feel with the JHM pulley? Curious if it feels any different than stock since it doesn't have the rubber damper.

Correct, you don't need the supercharger pulley if you run the OD crank pulley. It's actually larger in size than stock and lighter so it revs a bit quicker also.

To clarify...I still had to buy the APR pulley just to get the stage 2 tuning code. I am thinking of installing it too, rather than just having it as a paperweight. That's why I'm perusing these threads.

Much thanks to you guys for the help installing that. I believe I'll let Ryan do the SC pulley. He has those special tools. After doing some pulley math in another thread, I'm thinking about undoing the VAGCom mod to disable auto-upshift in manual, just to make sure I don't over-spin that bitch.

My bad! I should have remembered you saying this, It didn't click that you were forced to buy it.

I'm running this dual pulley (JHM/APR) on Apr stage 2 tune. Patiently waiting for their dual pulley tune and b8.5 stalk switching set up.
    work hard, play hard[;)

It seems that Dual Pulley Set up + Full E85 MAP could be a verry smart Stage 3 !

Comfort wise you shouldn't notice anything. Performance wise you should feel a nice bump

Did you notice a difference installing the JHM pulley on top of the APR pulley? I am stage 2 APR currently with their pulley installed, but I am looking at buying the JHM one if it shows gains.

Like a few other people in this thread I guess I haven't been paying enough attention to this and it's news to me. fitzydude, about how much does Revo charge for the 1+ tune without a pulley? And did you have to jump through hoops to do it or were they fine with it? Thanks.

Also, are there other downsides to this that I'm not seeing? It seems like a no-brainer if the price is fair.

If you are using OTS Stage 2 software your gains will be more torque down low because the blower will be spinning faster, bringing the boost in sooner. The peak boost will stay the same because of the predetermined bleed-off from the software.

From a preventative maintenance stand point it is a no brainer, plus you get the added benefit of more power and less rotating mass. Win Win Win

Revo pricing was really good!! With their end of year sale and a 10% discount from the dealer I paid ~900 installed for the software. There was some confusion getting reflashed from 1 to 1+ because my dealer and Revo had not heard of the pulley yet.

About 48% of people here are concerned with putting an undampened on their car. The thought is the undampened pulley will create an imbalance and generate noise/vibration which will lead to excessive wear on your engine bearings. JHM has said of the engines they've disassembled with undampened/lightweight pulleys the bearings look as good if not better than the engines they've disassembled that had an oem dampened pulley. Personally, I've ran undampened/lightweight pulleys on several platforms over many miles and never had an issue. That's why I didn't hesitate to put one on my car!

For those with Revo Stage 1 tuning the upgrade is only 50 dollars.

My stock pulley made it to 109k and still looks good. Are you stage 2? It seems the smaller sc pulley puts extra stress on the OEM pulley, so if your not stage 2 you have a chance of making it longer.

The JHM OD Crank Pulley is designed to work with OEM SC pulley and the JHM Non-OD Crank Pulley is for Stage 2 SC pulley, right?
