Anyone else "enjoy" the Hawk 5.0 pads in the wet and cold?

Not sure if it is the shizzy Conti DWS (pre -06 or whatever update that is supposed to be a better tire) or just cold pads, but I've had more lock up (really anti-lock) and "um, where are my brakes?!?" moments today driving around in the mid-40 temps with loads of rain than I've ever had in my life (drove from just outside Louisville, KY back to ATL today). I get traction off the line so I'm more ready to blame the problem on the brakes than the tires. I'll really have to watch it as things get colder but I'm guessing the just not freezing temperature and water was really keeping the brakes cool today.

I haven't used the 5.0 pads, but I thought the Hawk HPS and HP+ were bad in really wet conditions.

Was driving in the freezing rain and snow/slush in Kansas city today, the DWS06 did well, can't speak for other drivers though.

I LOVE my Hawk HPS blue box they have been great in the snow and rain. They bite like crazy and i have almost been rear ended a few times in the wet/snow.

I had the HPS before the 5.0s. I don't remember the HPS being like this. I've still got the HPS in a box somewhere. If it ends up feeling bad enough I might surface the HPS pads and reinstall them.

I have the 5.0 - they don't bite early like stock, but if you put the pedal way down, they kick in.

That was my problem. No stop. No stop. No stop. Anti-lock.

Exact same issue. Not only in the cold wet but any heavy rain. I don't think it's the pads as much as the rotors... what kind of rotors do you have? Drilled and or slotted? They retain water and I would not be surprised if the water even will freeze slightly in the slots. It's a bad design for winter driving as the cold makes it worst. Mainly at highway speeds.

I'm running I'm running EBC RedStuff pads mind you... but again I don't think it's the pads as much as the rotors - drilled and slotted 2 piece from ECS.

I had the HP+ on my evo. Pretty much any cold or wet weather the brakes would have no initial bite. Great for aggressive driving, terrible for DD.

Hawk HP+ and the 5.0 are made of similar materials. Both use a ferro-carbon compound. Which optimal rage is from about 100-800 degrees. It's a pretty common occurrence that when the rotor's are soaked with water from rain or slush it takes a second or two to clear the rotor face. I've notice with stock and aftermarket brakes this happens. Unfortunately there's really no fix. Some have claimed slotted rotors will help wick water away since the slots act like channels in a tire tread but besides that it's just something you have to accept.

But the 5.0 is supposedly the newer/upgraded version, right? Just purchased (from you ), so I'll be interested to see I can validate any of the stuff that has already been mentioned.

    Thanks for the order!

They're supposed to be a compromise between the two. HP+ dust a good amount and can be noisy. I believe the HPS 5.0 is a less dusting and quieter formula. I run HP+ on my B6 A4 and I love them. They do dust quite a bit and get a little squeaky when creeping to a stop but the added performance when they are at temp makes it all worth it. They'll even throw sparks at night too if you really hammer them haha.

I haven't really had any problems with the Hawk HPS 5.0's and Zimmerman rotors. I'll continue to monitor this going forward. It's pretty typical that they aren't great until they get up to their temperature(I think there's a chart on the Hawk Pads, with the optimal temp ranges for each pad). I've only had ABS kick in once but it was in the rain and I really was braking hard as we were about to pass our turnoff to the lakehouse we were renting. So it was like a 60-5 stop in the rain pretty quickly.

Curious to see how this evolves as the temps get colder here.

I mean, they do slow the car down and stop it in normal traffic but it seemed I could trigger the "omg panic stop!!" (anti)lock with less pedal on the stock ones. HPS 5.0 with plain Zimmerman rotors.

I've been running the Hawk Luxury and Touring pads for almost a year on my 2011 and they've worked out very well for me. I'm not that aggressive in my braking so they've been a good choice. They provide smooth, predictable braking in dry/wet and hot/cold. They're very quiet and my wheels stay amazingly dust free.
