Can I use a battery charger to test a motor?

If all I want to do is test a 12v motor see of its working, is a regular battery charger a suitable source of 12v for that instead of running test wires to the battery or finding another battery? I searched and found no clear answer. Perhaps a battery charger does not actually deliver 12v?

What charger are you using. It comes down to amps.

If it's a smart charger than likely not, as it will not deliver power before analyzing the battery. One of those basic $20 chargers will work fine.

edit: Google search for "battery charger as power supply". You'll find tons of info on this topic. eg. http://ask.metafilter.com/63454/Batt...V-power-supply

    I don't think it's smart. It's about 25 years old.

Thanks. I wish every car forum was even half as good as this one.

I thought you were talking about trying to crank over an actual motor. Thanks for clarifying.
