    Brakes barely working

My brakes are acting like the booster is at 50% or there is a vacuum leak. Pads have life in them and rotors too. So everything looks fine but it isn't fine. I have to press the brake pedal pretty hard to stop. The pedal is not firm like a bad booster or a vacuum leak. It's somewhere in between. No fluid leaks, any ideas? It's been this way for about three months and today the abs circle within in parentheses came on.

I wonder if my calipers are just worn out or if I stopped too hard and glazed my pads?

Sure sounds like a loss of vacuum to the brake booster. with the engine at idle try wiggling all the hoses from the brake booster back to the intake manifold and listen for any hissing indicating a leak.

If the things old guy recommended don't turn out to be the cause, have you replaced the fluid any the last couple of years? Maybe you have air in the system and need to bleed them?

Thanks for the responses. I have done a bit of a shakedown of the vacuum line which connects to another thing a majig. I don't hear any hissing or suction. I have replaced the fluid with brand new Audi dot4 last summer, I did a complete bleed. Manually pumping the brake pedal for each caliper, starting with rear right, front left, rear left, front right. This literally began one day, and since then hasn't gotten better.

How does the brake booster connect to the manifold? I've looked and it looks like there's a miniature suction jet pump in there before it connects to the manifold? With a check valve on it? Would something further down that path cause this problem?

Have you tried pushing the calipers back in? Sometimes if they are seized, you can get lucky and free them up like this.

I haven't. Calipers are so cheap I'll just replace them soon.

If you hit the brakes hard and come to a near complete stop does the engine bog down slightly and sound like its struggling to stay running? That was the symptom I had when my SJP failed internally, plus I also had the weak brakes

That hasn't been symptoms thus far. I might get some time tomorrow to investigate. We're getting a foot of snow, I might get a snow day.
