01E swap, find donor car or source parts individually?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I already have an 01E in my garage, and my 2001 Noggy TIP. I was looking into just buying a whole car to extract the parts from, as i feel with would be the most cost effective and I could use some small odds and ends. What do you guys think? Ive been on co-part.com thinking about bidding on a car on there. Any of you guys had experience with them?

I just did this and am putting my setup back in. I bought a "swap kit" from a seller who supposedly had sold many. the kit came missing many miscellaneous nuts, bolts, lines, and pieces needed for the swap. S4 wiki has a list of the parts needed, although I found the list of bolts for the trans to engine bell-housing to be a bit off.

piecing a kit together on your own could be tedious, but if you're very organized it may be a great way to go and ensure you get everything you need. you're going to want to go tax-auditor like in listing and checking every part needed. if I were to do it again, I would consider going with a very reputable seller of a kit. I didn't buy from him, but from what I gathered, Scott at advanced automotion sells a pretty comprehensive swap kit for a decent price. also rebuilds the 01E he sends you.

co-part.com might be okay if you buy the entire car. only issue is you don't know what kind of driving condition the car was in. they're a salvage auction house, so the car may have be crushed in an accident, damaging parts etc. it's a little more risky.

Thank you for the input. Id imagine you could buy a "wrecked" car for a few hundred right? I wouldnt spend more than $1000 probably for one is decent shape. Like i said, i dont really need the 01E but i guess i could keep a spare. How much did the shipping alone cost for your kit?

it was $185 for freight shipping. a few hundred bucks for a salvaged 6 speed might be worth it. you should be able to pull a good amount of what you'd need from it even if some wasn't usable.

if only audi only offered this car as a 6 speed. these swaps wouldn't be necessary. damn you, audi. damn you

I wonder how many people get the FHM driveshaft adapter and use the auto rear diff and driveshaft? lol

I think you'd still have to replace the rear diff with the adapter. looks like a nice piece, but the ratio is diff in the tip, pun intended. I considered using my auto drive shaft, because it was in GREAT shape. but I feel weird about non-OEM stuff so I opted for the real-deal manual prop shaft

Yea, seems the best route to be honest. Plus having extra afterwards.

I'd hate to tell you, but wrecked A6's with a 6 speed go for alot more than "A Few hundred". Last few A6 manuals with lower mileage I've seen at Copart were $1200, $1600 and $2100. Then there is shipping, and your assuming all risk. IE there's a decent chance that the part you seeks are junk.

Rear auto diff won't work unless you use a different 01E final drive.

Buy a write off, remove parts you need and part out the rest. It may be a long process but you should at least get most of your money back. Thing with parting out a car is to take your time not to damage anything when removing parts and you can maximize value. Ive seen a lot of guys tear everything off and then try to sell a bunch of broken parts to no avail.

I sent you a PM Scotty. But yea thats what i was asking, i never had a chance to pay attention to the final prices, but i understand the risks and obviously having it shipped... The thing is i need all the swap parts but I need a ECU as well so i can start logging/tuning, I have a APR ecu so Id rather get a factory one. I also need some other random odds and ends, so i figured even if it does end up costing near 1000 and you pay 300-500 shipping, seems like you're still better off. If you did end up needing something else its easier for someone thats not around dozens of these cars all day to find random pieces here or there than a whole bunch of stuff. $2100 is too much though.
