    2013 S4 MMI Cable Question

    I have a question about the MMI cables for a 2013 S4. Driving back from Christmas I downloaded some podcasts onto my IPad Air (so lightning connector). I bought my car used and it came with a single cable; a female USB cable (so you can plug a USB cable into it). I can plug my Android phone into it using a mini USB cable and it recognizes it. But when I plug the lightning cable into the USB port it does not recognize my IPad. Do I need to buy the lightning MMI connector to get MMI to recognize my IPad?

    Now I got the IPad to connect via bluetooth so it worked fine but I am wondering if I need a dedicated lightning MMI cable to connect it directly.

    Thanks!

    There is an adapter for the MMIs old style to lightning but members say it needs to be the OEM type from Apple.

    Is that related to the real bad reviews i see on Amazon for non-OEM lightning MMI cables?

    No, it is based on experience from Audi owners. I can say from experience. My cable has a 30 pin male end. I purchased a 30 pin to lightning adapter clone. It did not work. Purchased the apple product and it works just fine. In fact Audi makes a cable with the lightening adapter male end. That is probably what you should buy.

    Ok, I think I am tracking now. Lightning came out in 2012 so 2013 probably was still wired for the earlier 30 pin Apple connector. The non-OEM ones apparently are not pinned right.

    So two options;

    Genuine Apple 30 pin to lightning adaptor (which might not work for me since I currently have a USB MMI cable so I would have to go USB to old Apple 30 pin to Apple 30 pin to lightning adaptor to lightning cable)

    or just buy the Audi OEM Lightning MMI cable.

    Am I tracking?

    In your case I'd just buy the OEM lighting AMI adapter
