Question on the Mech Unit DSG Transmission?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Ok new question. ?.
For the members that have been reading or posting on the treads that I started.
As you know, it looks like I have a failing Mech unit, or what ever its called.
I've got the beep, light and message (Gearbox Malfunction, you may continue driving) a total of 3 different times. Each time the message popped up about 4 to 10 times in a matter of minutes.
I just had my 35k mile service done where part of it is changing the DSG Fluid and filter.
I Really was hoping it wouldn't come up again after the service was done. But it did Thursday, which madeIit the third time total.
My car runs strong, seems to shift fine, I don't have any of the skipping gears or surging or even clunking that I have read about. The car is my daily driver so its still being driven daily.
I do drive aggressive, or spirited if you will.
What happens when this goes or gets worse. Am I doing damage to the transmission by still driving the way I do? I don't drive it hard all the time but when I get the urge I don't hold back either.
I went to pick up a movie after dinner tonight, got on the 3 mile spur and had the urge.
In dynamic mode in sport I put it to the floor in second gear and ran it out to 148mph. The car felt great, no fault lights, no hiccups, just pulled strong and shifted great each time.
I have a feeling I'm not helping the issue, but damn, the car makes me smile when I put the throttle down.
I have a p3cars gauge in my car now running the ECS BOOST tap.
When I hit the recall after the pull it read 17.0 even.

    Thanks, Bill

Whats your question? If its safe to drive with a failing mech unit? I will say it probably wont do damage to the trans itself but will leave you stranded eventually. Just get it fixed and either sell the car or keep it.

If you are going to keep it ask for a warranty on the mech unit that they will fix.

I guess my main question is besides the light and message I've got on three different days whats really going on and how does it degress to it not being drivable? The car runs and drives great. So I guess im just not knowledgeable on the course of what happens to the point where ill get stranded as you put it,
My local dealer won't due any warranty work to the car besides my Audicare services because the car is tuned and modded. I am going to get a hold of the dealership where I bought it to see if they can do anything.
If not ill have to wait till my tax return to be able to fix it.

Well the mech unit is the unit that basically tells the car what gear it is in, so it might get stuck in nuetral if it thinks you are in a different gear. I have never had this problem and hopefully never will but would assume that it will get worse over time for you.

Having a tune pretty much garuntees that you wont have much luck with warranty issues. It only is around 2k-5k, not to be nasty or anything but maybe this isnt the car for you if you cant budget that, much in for emergency repairs. Hope everything works out for you though

The mech unit is the robot in the transmission that does all the gear shifting. It's comprised of the transmission control unit and all the electro-hydraulic mechanics to do the physical gear shifting. If it completely fails, you'll be dead in the water as you can't shift any gears anymore. One can only hope that a malfunction won't lead to a money shift blowing the engine while you are at it. Hopefully, there are enough fail safe mechanisms in place that if it does fail, it fails gracefully, but I wouldn't recommend ripping around like you described until you get it fixed.

I appreciate your opinion, as I appreciate all opinions from people on any forum I'm on.
And don't worry you didn't make me feel insulted at all.
I work hard, I should have worked harder when I was in school and instead I would probably have a R8 and not a S4.
I normally would have money in the bank to cover this repair, I put 10 grand down cash when I bought this car how ever many months ago, since then between new wheels and tires, plus winter tires and everything else I've done to this car is about another 8k or more. I don't do credit cards, I pay my bills and save for extras. Pay cash for the extras. Yes I have a mortgage, Home Equity loan, my S4 payment, my wifes car payment, my Harley payment So I am in debt, I just don't like having credit card debt.
I'll save the cash soon, or like I mentioned for sure will have it by tax time.
If you only knew of some of my builds in the past you wouldn't think I'm over my head in the S4.
I've had many cars, trucks sticker 50 to mid 70k and then dump another 40k into the build.
I'm getting old, be 49 next month and I'm slowly trying to let go the performance, racing side of me to put my family and myself in a better financial place for the future.
It's hard though, I really am having a tuff time trying to leave my main passion that I've had for since about 10 years old and find something that can fill the void.
Atleast I trying, not successful yet but trying.

    Ok here is an update.....
I'm just going to deal with this on my own.
I just ordered the Mechatronics repair kit from ECS Tuning,
    $384.63 shipped.
I have a good friend that owns a shop and just talked with him.
He is very comfortable in changing this out for me.
He told me he just did this same job on a BMW last week.
So I'm anxious for this to get done so I can stop worrying about my car and bothering all of you with all these threads I start. Lol
Thanks again for all of your comments and help you have given me.
    Happy Holidays to all.

Dont want to put a downer on this - I have read all the topics you have started.

A dealer that says they carried out the same repair on a BMW box? I would run a mile. Totally different boxes. It's like going to see a dentist for a broken jaw. Similar, but not really the right person for the job.

Did you speak to the original dealer you purchased it from? I haven't seen you say yes or no in any posts yet? What if you call them and they say "we will cover it". Problem solved. JUST CALL THEM.

    If they are closed, wait.

No offence, but for a 49 year old you need to learn how to be patient.

curious as to why mech replacement at the dealer is 4k and ecs repair kit is 400$.. surely it can't be just all mark-up. this repair ecs kit must not be a full kit.. no ?

I think some of the details are mixed up in that thread:

Item #1: The complete B8 S4 transmision is about $9k, plus maybe $2k to $3K installation labor.
Audi Genuine Factory Part, TRANSAXLE S4, Part Number: 0B5300058N002 , Fits 2011 Audi S4 Base
    MSRP, $9,146.64 , Online Price, $8,506.40

Item 4 & Item 3 appear to be the same kit.

One one the repair kits is for the smaller S3/GTI DSG, not the B8 S4, Item #5. [http://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/6836...04K10023/]Auto Trans valve Replacement kit Audi, Volkswagen Auto Trans Valve Body Replacement Kit (Mechatronic) (Genuine) - 104K10023 - Free Shipping[/URL]"

Some examples of the OB5 DSG details, yours may be different.

Here is an excerpt from the 7-speed dual clutch gearbox 0B5 (S tronic) workshop manual on "Removing and installing mechatronic unit for dual clutch gearbox -J743-"

And here is an exploded view of OB5

If you’re taking on this repair there’s plenty of comments and post regarding how to and DIY.
    I’m currently doing this myself!
The only thing I would add is: you can get the repair kit for cheaper here https://www.audiusaparts.com/oem-par...kit-0b5398009e
    Rather than ECS Tunning $400+/-
