Suggestion: Best Fixes to make for cars with more than 100k

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have an Audi A4 3.0 B6 and it sits at more than 100k. Received fairly recently. I was wondering what changes can I make to improve the performance drastically. Like with computers a small upgrade to SSD will improve speed by 2x and is easily the best upgrade you can make.

For example, I know ATF alone would make my car feel much better at shifting.

    Any other thoughts?

    And Merry Christmas everyone!

That thread won't do much good for the OP since it is all 1.8T stuff and they have a 3.0.

OP, worry about doing all the routine maintenance first, then worry about go fast stuff. For the V6, there isn't too much you can do to drastically change performance with an engine swap, but you can make it more fun to drive. It should also be a fairly reliable car if you take care of it.

Sure it will. Lots of the ideas/intent are transferable. OP will just need to figure out the details specific to the 3.0

Just a quick browse of the links at the start of the thread, there were a lot of 1.8 specific things there. It'd probably take less time finding and filtering through the handful of 3.0 specific threads.

compression test to see how much life has been removed from the engine up until now.

check the records to see if the timing belt service was ever done...

make sure you have the OEM spark plugs. Probably need replacing if originals, definitely need replacing if not OEM.

If you decide to go the tranny fluid route, make sure you buy audi fluid. I don't have a tip, but from reading other threads, it seems the tip is a bit picky about its fluid.

easiest performance upgrade: buy a rabbit diesel from the 80's and drive it for a week. then when you jump in your audi it will seem really peppy.

Thank you for all the awesome replies. Definitely doing compression test. I have a P0441 and P0421 and I am pretty sure that Evap purge valve is gone bad. Seems easy to fix. I am not sure when was timing belt replaced so I am doing that for sure after winter as that would be a lot of working outside in cold.

Do you guys recommend getting Denso PK20TT spark plugs for this?

Work on reliability maintenance items first to make sure you have a solid platform for any performance improvements.

Do a full fluid flush - power steering, brakes (DOT 4), coolant, transmission, and differentials.
If you're not sure when the timing belt was replaced, then get a full kit that includes the timing belt, accessory belt, tensioner, coolant, water pump, and valve cover gaskets.
Look into getting a fresh set of ignition coils and spark plugs.
Check all vacuum lines and check valves for any signs of wear/cracks/etc.
Check front control arms (upper and lower) for excess play. The bushings tend to go bad, get chewed up, and will cause uneven tire wear and sloppy steering.
Check CV boot for any signs of cracks and grease seeping onto the brakes/wheels. If you hear any chirping noises when going over bumps, it may be the CV joints that need replacing.
If you don't have the full history of the car, also look into getting a new air filter and charcoal cabin filter to complete the overall tune up.

Once you've checked these items, then you can look into doing compression testing if you intend to do anything with the engine for more power. There's not a lot of options off the shelf for the 3.0. There is a supercharger kit out there, but many have had issues with it (blowing up the engine). All other tweaks will yield very mild gains (5-10hp).
