Good luck! My advice is to become very knowledgeable about the vehicle and buying process so that you don't need to rely on your salesperson for anything besides customer service. I initially was looking in the Tri-state area and ended up purchasing my A7 in VT.

Know what trim level you want, and what you want to pay. If you only search CPO dealers, the ranges become pretty clear. Use a wide search area to gather price info, and then narrow the search to your travel radius. Once you find a vehicle that you would buy (assuming the test drive, cosmetic inspection, go well at delivery, etc.) you can negotiate terms online/by phone before traveling.

If you're financing, know which bureau has your best score and let the finance folks at the dealer know they should only approach lenders who use that bureau. Also a good idea to obtain your own financing (or tell them you have) to ensure they offer competitive rates.

I've found the best way to keep dealers honest is to show early and often that you know exactly what you're doing and what you want.
