Missing piece from Oil Filter Housing....?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just helped a friend of mine do an oil change on his b7 and realized the oil filter housing was missing that canister-like piece where you normally insert the oil filter... All he's previous oil
changes were done by one of his indy shop that specializes on German cars and i was baffled as how they never noticed it...

The filter can be inserted onto the other part of the oil filter housing because i believe there is a 2-3inch canister that the filter goes into but surely it cant be right to run the car like this, wouldn't the oil filter be crushed by the pressure...! surely in his case somehow the filter is fine. He hasn't had any issues and i have no clue how long its been running like this, had him buy a new filter housing.

Mine doesn't have that bit either. Never knew there should be something there. I use Wix filters and I have never noticed any crushing going on when I change them out.

The better question would be, where did all that plastic end up..? I just made him buy a new one to be on the safe side, i mean there is a reason why its there in first place.

Balls... Never heard of that before but reading up on it it sounds somewhat important... Especially with winter and lots of cold starts coming. I will definitely purchase a new one for my next oil change. I doubt it broke off and left pieces in the engine. Looking online it appears that if you rock it back and forth a bit the valve disconnects from the filter housing. My guess is that it popped out along with the filter at some point and someone just threw it away.

I saw something from ecs on v dub vortex that shows how to remove your oem bypass valve and insert it into their billet housing... So I think your expected to reuse that part with the new housing.

Thats their brand and if you watch the video they specifically show how they take it off the old one and transfer it into the other one.

I'm just trying to figure out how important that part is, and you would think the filter would become loose inside the housing from the pressure

Hard to say... If the filter isn't making contact on both sides it would be the same as if the bypass valve were permanently open.... Which is amazing for oil flow, terrible for filtration.

If the filter does seal at both ends it means that the engine won't be able to get adequate oil flow when cold starting or under full throttle high oil pressure situations.

Question is, does it seal without the bypass part in place?

We paid an unexpected visit to the indy shop that my friend has been servicing his car for the last 3 years. Showed them the old filter housing and they initially said thats how its suppose to be then, we when showed pictures of what the oil filter housing was suppose to look they went silent for a couple seconds. They told him they have never seen that part on his oil
filter housing and they didn't know it was suppose to be there.

I told him at least they were honest with you. I think i already convinced him to do his own oil changes next time, especially hearing what they had told him.

Is this valve supposed to remain in the filter housing or come out with the filter? On one of my oil changes, I forgot to put the valve back with the filter. The housing would not seal the oil inside. I remember doing this oil change the first time, this valve did not come out, just the filter.

The valve is part of lower part of oil filter housing, so yes it should come out attached to the oil filter housing.

I just installed my new filter housing (ordered from EuropaParts) complete with the filter bypass valve tonight while doing a somewhat early oil change because of the paranoia caused by knowing your car's missing a part

Just in case anyone was wondering, after inspecting the fitment of the oil filter before and after it appears that without the valve in place your oil will circulate as if the bypass valve was permanently open (even less restrictive than that, actually). Meaning, your filter isn't doing a whole lot to clean the oil without that bypass valve in place. I don't know how long I've been running my engine like that but it has been at least a couple years I'd wager. No real adverse effects and I tend to change my oil every 5K miles or so. But still, it makes me wonder if subtle damage has already been done to oil lines/pumps/engine parts because of increased particulates in the oil.

Missing piece from Oil Filter Housing....?

My friend received his oil filter housing too, and I'm not sure whether to do an oil change again because he just replaced his oil a week ago, I'm pretty sure the only oil that needs draining is from the oil filter housing.!

You will only lose about half a quart by draining the housing.

Yeah I wouldn't bother draining the pan. Just swap the housing and top off whatever oil you lost in the process. Filter might even be salvageable.

The shop installs a oil fitting attached to the oil gallery system that would normally drain to the oil pan and then pressurizing with a oil flush chemicals in reverse flow. It suppose to get rid of sludge and deposits

I'm new to the Audi world. Just got the oil changed in my new-to-me 06' A4.

Looks like housing bypass valve is missing. I have another one coming in the mail along with a billet ECS upgrade.

In the meantime, should I worry about this affecting my car? Lack of oil flow an issue?

    Thanks!

I don't think you'll have an issue since you had it running before until you found out anyway, just like with my car, i put 10k before i realized it was missing.
