Ok, this is a first...anyone else been stabbed by their start button?

Today I hopped in my car and jabbed the start button like I've done a thousand times, only to be greeted by a stabbing pain in my finger; it felt like I hit a shard of glass pointing straight up into my finger. Got a nice tiny cut:



It looks like it was from metal in the top of the N having popped up and detached somehow (I tossed the offending bit of metal out of the car before I realized what it was). WTF?

Seriously? I would have sworn I was the only one on the planet that this had happened too...weird. Heck of a design defect. Did you get your button replaced, or is it actually safer to keep it defanged as-is? : )

Still have same button, thought about updating it to the red ring one...but apparently they do the same

Same happened to me, got replaced under warranty by the red ringed button. Was hoping this wouldn't happen again...

The wife had this happen in her S4 before we traded it. I didn't believe her until I saw it for myself....

Just grabbed a pic w/my cell phone since I almost couldn't believe that I was really stabbed by my start button. : ) I figured people online might not even believe this was a thing...sadly, it sounds like this is pretty common, which kind of blows my mind. Though I guess if something has to fail stupidly it may as well be a cheap/minor thing rather than, say, the transmission. : )

remove the button and spray it with clear coat so you don't get stabbed anymore.

i can't see clear coat would help with that. it's like saying ; clear coat your front-end, you won't get paint chip.

Best thing to do is put a clear laminate. However, I thought the red ring push button was free of this problem. seems not !

You have the old button.. it has happened to me.. It's from wiping everything down with a microfiber towel. It catches the edges and pulls them up. The upgraded ones have the "A, N" letters connected.

Happened twice with my b8 a4. B8.5 s4 good so far. Button was improved I believe, benefit of mid model update.

Exactly what I was thinking...LOL- part of the latest in auto theft protection. Thank goodness you registered your blood during initial delivery, the results for failing the test are catastrophic.

If you leave your finger there for a second after that happens, the MMI tells you your blood sugar to make sure your safe to drive.

wow..first time I saw/heard of this..I had my car for almost 6 years and never got stabbed once by my start button..and i used my start button countless times. must have been a sharp piece to get pricked like that..

Ouch. I've seen lots of cars for sale where that part of the start button has delaminated. Must be a design defect.
