    50k Service?

    Folks,

About the only thing that did not come with my car was the owners/services manual. I searched online and there doesn't seem to be anything too involved for when the car hits 50k miles. My car was a CPO car, but unfortunately the CPO did not transfer to my name because well, that's just how Audi works. That said, the car was maintained meticulously prior to my ownership, and since I became the owner, it has undergone 2 oil changes (roughly every ~5000 miles). Visually I know that I will need tires and possibly brake pads/rotors within the next 5-10k miles. Outside of that, anything else that's necessary?

Also, how long do the original pads and rotors last, on average? I know this question is entirely dependent on the driver and how the car is driven. I have the feeling that my car is still on original pads and rotors.

Thank you everyone, and happy holidays! :)

    How hard did you search?

    It's every 10k miles starting at 5K.

    https://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/...-Year-2010.pdf

    Your 55k is next.

I would do the cabin air filter too, it's quite simple. The other things to look out for is the battery since you are getting just around that time.

Pads/Rotors all vary but if it is your original set you should be due for a new set of both.

Apparently not hard enough or maybe the results I got were useless (I googled "audi s5 service intervals")...thanks for the info! I will review it in detail.

If you do go for the service I highly recommend printing it out and highlighting everything that pertains to your car. Make sure the SA gives it to the tech so everything gets done. I didn't do that on my first visit and went home and checked everything and the tech missed a few. Audi doesn't really give the techs a guideline on what is supposed to be done for each cars service appt.

I think Sparkplugs are on the list for 55K service on an S5 as well. Just had mine done a few months ago.

Based on the list provided above for all 2010 models, this is what I gathered that applies to the S5 for the 55k mile service:

Engine Oil/Oil Filter – change oil and replace filter

Cooling System – check level, add if necessary

Engine Compartment – check for leaks
Battery – check and replace if necessary
Dust and Pollen Filter – replace
Spark Plugs – replace at 55,000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first. Thereafter, every 60,000 miles or 6 years, whichever occurs first.
Air Cleaner – clean housing, replace filter element
Snow Screen for Air Cleaner – clean
Plenum Panel – remove cover for plenum panel to check water drain and clean if necessary
Tires and Spare Wheel – check for wear and damage, check tire pressure and renewal date of tire repair set (where applicable), reset Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Wiper Blades – check condition and replace if necessary
Wiper/Washer/Headlight Washer – check adjustment and function, add fluid if necessary
    Service Reminder Display – reset

    Horn – check function
Brake System – check for damage, leaks, pad thickness, fluid level
Exhaust System – check for damage, leaks
    Drive Shaft Boots – check

Manual Transmission and Final Drive – check for leaks
Underbody – check for damage and leaks
Road Test – check braking, kick-down, steering, electrical, heating and ventilation systems, air conditioning, ASL Automatic Shift Lock, power accessories and reset driver information display
Brake Fluid – replace every 2 years regardless of mileage.

    I have two more questions:

    1) Does anyone know why my car is telling me that the service is due now (51,900 miles) and not at 55k? It started to count down from 1000 until it got to this point. Since I'm doing 5k-mile oil changes, I'm sure I'll be ok if I wait it out to 55k to do it all. Last oil change was at 47-48k.

    2) Also, what is it running people to have this performed at the dealer? I've heard some outrageous prices before, and if that's the case I may do it all myself or have a certified independent shop do it.

    Thanks!

I purchased the car late June last year, and after 3 months of ownership I had an oil change performed (small service). Maybe it's the fact that the car is 6 years old (a time milestone) but not quite at 55k miles yet (but close).

It's based on when the tech reset the maintenance check up. It will count down from 1 year and 10,000 miles.

The interval is every 10k miles after the initial 5K but there is time like a year or so that goes along with that.

For example my car always tells me in early spring to change the oil because i don't ever hit the 10k miles. I'm guessing that maybe the service interval wasn't reset last time you got the oil changed and the car is thinking you are near the 1 year interval.

It's interesting; the oil change is counting down appropriately, so it seems like it was reset. The inspection/service interval says it's due for service.

The time thing is definitely a bit annoying. My 2011 has 35k miles and it will be up for its 65k service this year. Not sure what happens when i max out the maintenance schedule. I am barely putting miles on it.

Does anyone know what it runs to perform the 55k service on average? My local dealer quoted me $722 plus $189 if the brake fluid needs to be flushed. This is outrageous, specially for things that I can do myself. Or is there a shop that sells a 55k mile bundle for the DIYers?

    Thanks!

+1. I did the 65K service on my '09 last April, with less than 28K miles on the odometer! I estimate I will be at just about 32K miles for my 75K service in three months.

Reviving this thread - I'm getting ready to purchase the stuff I need, and was wondering what the consensus is of LiquiMolly oil versus the OEM Castrol used by the dealers? The EuropaParts kit linked above doesn't give me the option to select an oem oil. Where is everyone getting their kits from for the 55k service?

    Thanks!

Personally LiquiMolly is better. I'm getting an oil change next week and my shop uses LiquiMolly. The kit you are looking into is great. You shouldn't have any issues with it. If you can swing it go with Motul, top of the line. Make sure to get a new drain gasket too.

So if you click on that link, there are multiple types of LiquiMolly...the premium and another 5w40 right underneath. Do you know the difference? Also, what advantage would Motul offer? I'm doing 5k miles oil changes so I'm not sure that going with a super oil would make much of a difference. About the drain gasket, should I get a new plug or does the dealer usually just replace the gasket? It appears I can buy a plug, a gasket, and a "kit" which I don't know what it encompasses.

Are the spark plugs and filters (air and cabin) the recommended ones? I'm planning on doing oil, spark plugs, air/cabin filters, brake fluid flush.

    Thanks!

I personally just grab M1 0W-40, which is dirty cheap in walmart and of very great quality. Dealer will never touch your drain plug, they just suck old oil from dip stick.

Varies by the dealer. Mine drainds from the plug. OP isn't going to the dealer though.

Does anyone know or have a link where the part numbers have been specified? I need the following:

OEM oil (Castrol 5w40) part number
OEM drain plug gasket part number
    OEM oil filter part number
    OEM air filter part number
    OEM cabin filter part number
    OEM spark plug part number
What type of brake fluid is used/recommended by Audi?

Thanks! A local VW dealer is sourcing everything for me, and asked me for specific part numbers. I will then compare between buying all OEM or from Europaparts.

I suggest you go to ECSTuning and check it out, they have Audi OEM part number as well. And our car is using DOT 4 fluid. You can also get this fluid's part number from ECS.

Well elsaWin recommends suck oil from the dip stick and I know at least two dealerships I went to follow that method. Your dealer seems go an extra step, which is good. Also if you read carefully, OP does mention oil change at dealer in post #22.

I think he is referring to the dealer as the best thing to follow and he should do the same in that post. No big deal though

Great suggestion, thanks! I just got everything for $285, all OEM components.

No problem! That's a great price;) For me I also have transfer case and rear diff fluid changed. The ATF in rear sport diff is like $40 a quart, it's like liquid gold!

I've heard about the infamous ATF pricing! How many quarts does it take? I'm waiting until the next major service for that, as I will also be doing tires and brakes shortly!

Fortunately it only takes 1 qt.

I'm pleased with the Europaparts ultimate service kit (and copious oil selection).
My independent V.A.G. guru only charges $30 labor if I supply the oil change supplies, which saves a significant amount over the $550 my dealer wanted for the 55k service.
The cabin air & engine air filter changes are easy enough to DIY. When I had more time (fewer other hobbies) I used to do topside oil changes myself with a Pella on previous V.A.G. vehicles.

I hear ya! I'm very mechanically inclined myself and the simplicity of the service makes me want to do it all...it's things like not having a lift or a bleeding kit that made me go out and look for estimates. $550 for a 55k service is the lowest I've heard of coming from a dealer. Mine wanted $912, and they said they could only knock off 10% off that...sacrilegious to say the least.

I think I'll handle the spark plugs and both filters myself, then have my independent mechanic perform the oil change and brake fluid flush.

Their kit looks great, only thing that bothers me is the shipping costs. I rather buy filters and washers on amazon, and buy oils at local wally world.

TTRStud, your S5 calls for plugs @55k (not due at that interval for my 2.0T), so I'd guess that 'justifies' the dealer increased cost over the quote I got, but almost a grand is wicked steep.

Yes sir, correct on both accounts. My car calls for more parts and labor, but that shouldn't be almost double! Apparently a spark plug change on the 4.2 is not all that simple, since there are some things on the way that need to come out of the engine bay. I had not looked into it, since I usually do my own plug changes and in most of my prior cars (except Porsches) it's usually a walk on the park. There aren't any DIY's for the 4.2 that I could find either.
