So I was doing a quick pull getting on the freeway and shifted into 4th and felt the car misfire so I let off. As soon as I went to hit the gas I could tell the car was misfiring. I was thinking not a big deal probably blew a coil or plug. But as I was pulling off on my exit the car died and when I turned it back on it was smoking like crazy and still misfiring. I took a little video after I pulled into a parking lot.

I don't think that's a misfire. Do the RPM's bounce around at idle?

Sounds more like a spun bearing

    Misfire help

The car idles but you can tell its misfiring. I did start it up and it was only misfiring on cyl 2 and 6 count was over 200 idling for a couple minutes. It is still smoking like crazy.

Did you do the standard plug check to see gaps? With all those codes it may be an ICM. Unless you're FSI converted.

Haven't check the plugs yet doing that this morning. I am running the 2.0 conversion. I'm hoping it's just bad plugs.

Ok so here's an update. Pulled the plugs and this is what I found

Replaced the plugs and bad coils to find nothing changed, still smokes like crazy and misfires. I pulled the driver side valve cover to check the cams and lifters since cylinder 6 has the most misfires. Everything look fine.

Not sure where to go from here.

Black smoke or blue? Does it smell like burning oil?

I'd do a compression or leakdown test next.

The high knock levels on both banks is ominous.

Smoke is white. Smells like a mixture of fuel and oil. Do the compression test tomorrow I guess.

White smoke indicates coolant. Maybe lucky and just popped a head gasket.

The expansion tank shows no mixture though. I had a head gasket go last summer and this isn't the same thing. I really don't know.

Head gasket won't always mix oil with coolant. It can pop an and just allow coolant into the confusion chamber/combustion gases into the coolant passage.

That's exactly what happened last time. I was pushing coolant out the overflow hose when driving and misfiring under boost. Cylinder 6 is the worst and the plug doesn't look like coolant contamination it's black.

Just watched the video, and it doesn't sound good at all.

I would be doing a compression test followed by a leak down test if the first doesn't offer a conclusive result.

It's been a while since I have done a compression test. What fuse do you pull?

Look closer at the cams and lifters to see if they are going flat, or have punched through the lifters.
Hard to tell in the pic, but looks like they are on their way out.
There are only 2 things needed to make an Audi work properly - Duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn't - Duct tape. If it doesn’t move and it should - WD40.

Tapping sounds like it could be something under the car, it seems to be louder as you move away from the engine and head towards the rear of the car. Has it always done that or did it just start with the advent of this misfire issue? If it just started doing it, I'd be a little worried. Have you verified that the motor is still in time? What kind of mileage does it have on it?

From where you are now, I'd probably double check that the engine is still in time then run a compression test and see if you have anything funky going on, mainly focused on cylinders 2 and 6. Agree with zilla on the cams, looks like they may be starting to head south. Ideally you'd mic them and see how they measure out.

    Edit:

Sort of an afterthought, that looks like an oem tbb? Make sure it doesn't have a nice tear in it.

When did you last fill it with gas? That day?

I had a similar issue, which i spent weeks diagnosing only to find it was "Bad Gas" purchased the day I started having issues.
Look for my old thread - "missfire woes" or something like that.

It's fuse 28, but it'll also show you on the fuse panel cover. Make sure you start the car and let it die after you pull the fuse, then try to start it a few more times after it dies to make sure there is no residual fuel.

Curious about your result. I have a similar issue, almost identical to the OP's first post.
I scanned my car tonight and actually found 2 Lambda codes pop up both on bank 1 positions 1 &2. As well as having cylinders 1,2&3 showing a misfire. Switched my ICM's and still had the same thing.
