    2004 A4 1.8 question

Hi, first post, totally green to the audi world.
We bought this car this summer it has non stock exhaust, maybe reprogrammed. I don't really know what that means.
Stock turbo I think. 6 speed manual.

It ran fine this summer but when fall came (southern Ontario Canada) it started stalling when a red lights. Not always, actually more like one in 10 times. Fine on the highway, normal gas Milleage 8 L/100

We cleaned the maf and throttle.
    That's a little background.

My question, how do I know what reprogramming was done and what effect it may have on how the car runs?

Scan for codes first and report back.

How does it stall? Just dies? Or does it have a bouncing rpm idle? If the idle bounces around then I would say check for vacuum leaks. Should have a big one. Most likely the pcv. Remove the oil cap at idle. Does it have a vacuum pull on it?

By bouncing do you mean +/- 100 rpm on its way down to zero, then yes.
We will test the suction on the oil cap hole. But when I read your post a little "bingo" happened.

When we got the car it was leaking oil bad from the valve cover. We replaced the gasket and noticed the oil cap gasket was very hard an cracked. We made our own cork gasket. It' could be the problem so out I go to find a new proper gasket.

The new valve cover gasket has been good, no more leaks.

There were no engine codes until we cleaned the maf, it was dirty. But now we have a code in for that, we wrote the number down but it is in the car right now.

I suggest getting a boost gauge, its a wonderful diagnostic tool. Replace the MAF if its bad, scan the car for codes, and check for boost or vacuum leaks. If they havnt been replaced already, any and all of the plastic check valves and vacuum lines are brittle and failing/have failed. Its a good idea to replace ALL of them at once.

When it comes to sensors (and majority of the parts on our cars) OEM is the only way to go. You'll want a Bosch MAF.

There are a lot of boost gauges on ebay but I didn't find any for a 2004 a4. Is there already a sensor on the car, if so where is it

I will look for a Bosch maf, thanks.

Dont purchase parts off ebay, its all garbage.

Podi.ca is the most OEM+ looking gauge, and was founded by a B6 forum member. For ~$100 you can have a quality gauge and pod.

That does look good. What does the other end look like, where it connects in the engine bay?

Most use the nipple on the front of the intake manifold, and run the line through the driver side front fender and through the rubber grommet near the pedal assembly.
