But side question, what would you say is the main differences in driving the S4 vs the M3 as I was very close to pulling the trigger and going the other way? For me the steering feel of the M3 sold me over to truly thinking about the chance....

First off no wrong answer here just depends on what you're after. The high-revving naturally aspirated V8 in the M3 is one of the best engines out there. With the BMW performance exhaust the sound is great, check out this video:

For me, the S4 engine is plenty fast and very smooth.
I modified the car quickly so hard for me to compare the stock ride comfort, but I am confident the S4 is "cushier". The M3 handles great with tons of feel. For me, all the power in the rear was a bit scary in the rain. Quattro is far more practical.
Fit and finish on the S4 is miles ahead of the M3, I could never get the hood and bumper to line up to my OCD's satisfaction. The interior of the S4 is better thought out and easier to use.
The M3 screams "look at me" and brings with it tons of unwanted attention (race challenges to State Troopers watching you fill up with gas and setting up two miles down the road to try and grab you). To me, both cars are beautiful in their way. The coupe is great looking but a pain with kids or any passengers greater than one.
I am most likely older than you or almost anyone here and at this stage in my life, I just want to enjoy the ride and do not need the attention that comes with owning a high profile car. That said I look at photos of all my past vehicles and the M3 still makes me smile, and I think it is the most beautiful car I ever "built." Do I want it back, no, is it a great car anyone would love, hell yes.
My wife hated the M3, not that I care. So, in the end, follow your heart and enjoy the ride. Life is short own both. Best of luck. Reminiscing photo below:
Hope my rambling helps.
