B7 S4 Display issue after new battery.

    Hey Guys,

I have a 07 S4 and had a dead battery. I had charged the battery but it wasn't holding a charge, would click but not crank. I replaced the battery and now my central display between the tach and the speedo doesn't work, also the displays below each gauge with the odometer etc are blank and not lighting up at all. The car starts and runs fine, the gauges all work fine, i'm at a loss. Has anyone come across this before? Any help would be great!!

    Cheers,
    Ryan

There is more fuses and relays behind the lower shelf/driver's side kick panel. I don't think that is the issue though.

Do you have a vagcom? Ross-Tech sells them if you don't have one and it is about the best $350 that you can spend with one of these cars. I would want to scan the 17 - instrument cluster to see what fault codes are present.

You could also try disconnecting both battery cables, touch the two battery cables together, and reconnecting the battery cables. Sometimes the electrical systems do weird things.

I have also seen instrument clusters die from low battery voltage too. It was rare but it did happen. That would suck because a new virgin instrument cluster is like $1,200 US Dollars plus 2 hours of dealership labor to replace it because it has to be programmed with the dealership scan tool.

I apologize and don't mean to come out as wrong here, but as part of troubleshooting, are you talking about the center LCD display? This is the one with temperature, mpg and few other readings? There is a button in the wiper stalk to the right of the steering wheel. It's at the bottom, it turns that center piece on and off. Could that be off? You may already know about it, I just wanted to cross that off (but hope it's that easy, because it's free :)

I was thinking the same, but he also mentioned the clock/date and miles/odometer aren't on either.

    Hi Guys,
Yes you are correct it is that central display. But as also stated above the odometer and clock are also blank. Thank you for everyone's input.

    Cheers,
    Ryan

The display has died due to some issues that came up during the battery swap sorry but the only fix is to replace the instrument cluster

Have you tried replacing the ignition switch? Cheaper than a cluster

Noticed when starting my B7 that the DIS and the displays in the gauges go blank when cranking, so I was wondering if there is a relay that removes power to them when cranking?

And if there is that could be the problem???

this might be a worthless suggestion but it costs zero - take out the NAV disc and then put it back in. it might reinitialize something or simply knock the system off of top dead center.

if you have a NAV system that is. if not perhaps there is some other "system reset" for the onboard computer?

Bumping this old thread. I have this same issue after jumpstarting my 2007 RS4. I have not found a fix yet. Does anyone know if this issue was resolved?
